On Mate Selection and Matrimony (and how to avoid both) Part 5
So, the next day there we were gathered in our official hideout in the alcove beneath the old covered bridge on the river Stonegurgle. After setting up our “Headquarters” we began by assigning roles and ranks so as to make everything above board and official, with the specially designated rank of “super ultra mega private” being given to little Hornesbane so he wouldn’t cry and run off and squeal to his mother thus bringing ruination upon our fledgling “League of Liberty.” That sorted, we sat down to work. Impressively, F.F. had managed to “borrow” a detailed map of the village from the library which included all the plains and hills surrounding the village. He also brought along, in a rather comically oversized rucksack, a great deal of butcher paper, markers, rulers, stickers and all kinds of useful mapmaking equipment – he was always good about that sort of thing – and it gave our small gang of five a real feeling of seriousness and authenticity. Clubby had brought some very good snacks of bramblejam cakes and Charry and I supplied the dandelion tea. All in all, things were beginning to shape up well.
“As chief strategist,” said F.F., clearing his throat before presenting his plan, “I should propose-” at this point Clubby interjected, “Major, not Chief, we all decided.” F.F., correcting himself, began again, “Yes, right, as Major Strategist, I propose that the first thing we must do is pick our route for the race.” He paused for gravitas and then began again, “Now, if we head straight off to the Sanctuary Zone, which is likely to be either the edge of the Pineprickle Forest or, perhaps the Stonegurgle Falls like it was a few seasons ago, or that’s what my father said anyhow. Now, the thing is-” again F.F., was interrupted, this time by Charry. “It’s not either of those places this time,” said Charry rather nonchalantly finishing up the last crumbs of the bramblejam cakes.
For a moment, all was silent. F.F., visibly annoyed, looked up skeptically from his map, “How would you know where it is? It’s a secret and they don’t announce it until the week before the games. Be serious now, Charry!” he said. “Yeah, be serious OK?” said Clubby, joining the chastisement. Charry, unfeigned by the doubt of his comrades, continued licking his fingers and, after gulping down the remnants of his tea, continued, “Right, that’s why I snuck into the elder’s meeting the other night at the – what’s it called – you know, the Planning and Events Committee at the town hall. It’s just across the street from our shop, you know.” Charry’s family owned a flower shop near the center of the village which might have accounted for his fascination with insects and other tiny plant-feeding creatures since he was old enough to crawl.
“Jeepers,” said Clubby quite astonished at old Charry’s pluck. “Do go on,” I said, most intrigued by this new bit of intelligence. “Well, I remember old Mrs. Bightwater saying something about it to my mom, “planning for this year’s games,’ and ‘little Charry’s first trial, yes? I do hope he finds at least one pursuer’ and you know how she is, a terrific gossip. Anyway, I figured we might find out something useful but kids aren’t allowed, even adults can’t go in if they’re not committee members, so I snuck in.” Now things were getting really serious indeed. “You snuck into the meeting?” I said, in disbelief that Charry would take such a bold action with such apparent nonchalance.
“Yes, you know, I just scrambled up the side of the chimney and kind of shimmied through a crack above the awning. It’s an old straw-thatch roof, you know, and there’s a spot just barely big enough to sort of wedge through and get inside to grab the rafters. There was a swallow’s nest there last year, and Mr. Jawgrimer, the handy man, was supposed to have fixed it, but it didn’t do a very good job, or maybe he didn’t use enough pitch or something.” continued Charry.
今度はF.F.
“Anyway, what happened?” asked Clubby, clearly just as riveted as the rest of us.
“Well, you know, I just climbed up in a corner of the rafters and kind of, eavesdropped a bit. It’s funny how adults never seem to look up during meetings and other dull things like that, but they never do, that’s why I went in through the roof and not the side-door because it’s usually locked and-” now it was F.F.’s turn to interrupt, “Yes, but come to the point, man, what did you find out?” he said in great earnest.
“Oh yes, well they talked about lots of things, most of it so deadly dull that I thought I’d fall asleep and come crashing down at the table, but then they got onto the Youth Oni Games and I sort of perked up.”
“Charry, old sport, did they say where the sanctuary zone was?” I said, trying to keep him on track. Charry’s mind tended to wander and it was devilishly difficult to keep him focused on anything which might’ve been the root cause of his characteristically unreliable memory.
“Yes, I was just coming to that bit. It’s at the top of Hardtooth Hill, you know next to the big oak tree that overlooks the village. I think that’s why they picked it out, it’s a nice setting and the judges could see things more easily from that height. That’s why everyone was so pleased it wasn’t near the river, so they wouldn’t get splashed like that had a couple seasons ago, or near the edge of the forest because it was much more convenient to setup the spectator stands under the tree on top of the hill, and the view’s much better too, I think.”
We all sat in stunned silence at this revelation. Truly, a gift from the heavens and good elder yokai of the ancient days.
“And you’re sure about this, Charry. Completely sure?” asked F.F., not wanting to put a damper on things mind you, but as the whole of our strategy pinned on this information, it had to be a certainty.
ここでF.F.
“Yes,” said Charry, in his airy and typical sort of manner, “I remembered just now looking at your map, because it’s practically the same one that they had during the meeting and they kept pointing around Hardtooth Hill and talking a great deal about how it hadn’t been the Sanctuary Zone for ten seasons or so, and then they got to reminiscing, you know what adults are like, about the Youth Games from their time and-” here F.F., interjected again, though a bit more cordially this time, “All right, Charry, all right. That’s enough, It’s ok, I believe you.”
“Yes,” said Charry again, now somewhat distracted by an inch worm that had crawled onto to our chart table, “You see, that’s why I suggested to Clubby a week or so ago that we ought to do our exercise and training and running and all those other calisthenics, or whatever it’s called, around Hardtooth Hill, so as to you know, sort of get used to the place.”
Clubby look absolutely gobsmacked, “Well if you knew then, why on earth didn’t you mention that at the time?”
Charry, who had now coaxed the inchworm onto his foreclaw and was most engrossed in his newfound companion replied lackadaisically, “Oh, I must’ve forgotten,” he said, chuckling to himself a bit, “but I knew it was for a very good reason and I’d remember what the reason was sooner or later.”
For a moment we all sat in stunned silence, awestruck.
“You know Charry, you might be a…a genius or something like that.” I said clasping him on the shoulder.
“Yes, or something like that…” added F.F. with a brief roll of the yes.
“Or something is right,” echoed Clubby.
“Gee, thanks chums,” said Charry placing the inchworm down gently on a nearby leaf.
やがてF.F.
Then, with a sigh of notable disappointment, F.F. said, “Well, that scratches three of my five planned routes, but I suppose it’s simpler this way and that’s better for our odds.”
“Well, you can still show us the other plans if you’d like, F.F., especially since you went to all the trouble,” I offered trying to take the sting out of thing a bit. “No, no, it’s all right,” he said, “Hardtooth Hill, that makes things a bit trickier, but it’s within my predictions,” and with that, F.F. began dotting lines and making marks on the map in a most exacting manner. We all watched intently as he set to work, not wishing to disturb him, and Clubby in the meantime, gave some of the markers and butcher paper to “Super Ultra Mega Private Hornesbane” who demanded to develop his own “super ultra mega route.” After a few minutes, F.F. stood up and, being reasonably satisfied with his work, laid out the foundations of our cunning escape plan.
“Look here. If we head straight out to the hill from the starting point at the edge of Brambleberry Fields – remember, the start point never changes – then we’ll be sitting ducks. No matter how hard we train, we’d never be able to keep up a solid sprint all the way to the top of the hill, especially with Thelinda on our, well on your heels, that is,” said F.F., motioning to me, and my hairs stood on end at the very thought of it.
“Plus, there’s not a single good place to hide for hundreds of yards until you get to the Craggsclaw Thicket, and even if we wanted to hide there, we’d be easily surrounded.” This all seemed quite sound to us. F.F. was in rare form. He continued, “So here’s what we do. We head along the Stonegurgle, at a good pace but saving our energy for the final sprint, then we meet here at HQ, gather supplies – we’ll figure out those details later. From there, we split up, one pair going up this way, cutting through the edge of Pine Prickle forest, following the Old Oni’s Trail so as not to get lost before coming out here, near Tengu’s Rock. Then, cut across the field and take the final sprint up the short way to the top of the hill. As for the other pair, it’s a bit simpler but a longer path. From HQ, continue following along the river to edge of Stonegurgle Falls, then, around Kanibozu Shrine – staying away from the main path, and going up through here, see? Then, finally sneaking up to top of the hill the long way via “Scarsong’s Stony Steps,” like we had to do last summer, on the class outing remember?”
続いてF.F.
“Oh, yes, I remember! I found a snake that day but Mrs. Fangbottom said I couldn’t bring it back to class and the girls wouldn’t stop screaming,” said Charry, breaking the tension of the moment.”
“Ahem,” said F.F. with a cough, “Yes, precisely. Well, those are the routes, any objections?” No one raised a hand. It all seemed pretty solid.
“Now, as for pairs, I think it should be me and Clubby, since I’m the slowest and Clubby’s the fastest to sort of balance things out.” A nod of affirmation from Clubby. He then motioned to me and said, “Then, you and Charry since you’re the most, well, reasonable and Charry’s well…Charry is Charry,” said F.F. in a matter-of-fact manner, to which we all (Charry included) nodded most enthusiastically.
そこでF.F.
“Sounds very good to me. Well done, F.F.!” I said heartily.
“Here, here,” echoed Clubby and little Hardhorne too, who had stopped doodling for the moment.
“Well, it was much easier once Charry got us that crucial bit of enemy intelligence.” Taking a serious air for a moment, “Gentlemen, I think we might really stand a fighting chance now,” he said with a determined grin. The rest of us thought so too. Things were really coming together.
“Hurrah!” I shouted, and the rest of the lads shouted “Hurrah!” two times more. The plan was now in motion and we all felt that our League of Liberty might see victory after all.
“What a splendid land this is, and how lovely are its people! Fear not, I promise not to eat anyone!”
