14】- On Mate Selection and Matrimony (and how to avoid both) Part 14

I don’t know if you’ve ever been in the midst of one of these small town festivals, or fairs, or bacchanalian galas wherein virtually all residents, even the local hermit and wealthy widow who always seem to bear great resentment towards all the townsfolk despite having almost no contact with them, are all gathered together in a great, humming swarm of activity. I wouldn’t go so far as to say it’s not to be missed, or even recommended should you have something better to do. However, I would say that it’s one of the best opportunities one might have to witness a most peculiar phenomenon. For the moment the principle event is set to begin, that is the whole reason for all this commotion and frolicking, a very strange thing occurs. All the hustle and bustle ceases as if by magic and time itself slows down bit-by-bit until it practically stops altogether. The food stall vendors, the various peddlers of goods, the hucksters of games of skill and chance and their mostly unlucky contestants, the clusters of bickering old oni slamming their canes on the ground over a game of “Castles and Clubs” (which is similar to what you might call chess only far less elegant), and the general mass of merrymaking of family and friends – it all freezes at once, out of joint with the whole flow of time. We oni, and I suspect this is true of many of the varieties of mankind as well, often require several iterations of, “Attention please,” or “If you would please find your seats,” or even the slightly less cordial, “Order!” followed by striking something solid with a club to restore some semblance of peace in anything larger than tea for two for the most part. Hence, it seems dashed odd that once you reach a critical mass of nearly a thousand of us, it only takes a few chimes of a bell and the mere sight of some authority figure to snap us in line like a platoon of well disciplined soldiers. Like a conductor striking up a band, some official – invariably the mayor, who lives for these moments and would sooner trade his right eye than forfeit the opportunity to address the multitude at the height of pomp and ceremony – takes to the grandstand and breaks the spell.

And so it was now, as in the next moment while the echo of the bells still reverberated through the air, the whole town of Stonesgurgle hastened in a more or less orderly mob towards the grandstand. There was Mayor Hornesworth, practically giddy with excitement and dressed in his ceremonial robes, just beginning his ascent up the steps to the rostrum as a great river of oni kith and kin all surged forth to the town square. And so, our merry League of Liberty followed with steely resolve as the final test was soon to begin but not, as is so often the cause with these sorts of affairs, without a series of lengthy, traditional processions and ceremonies. I often wondered if the real reason that history is so chock-full of tales of surprise attacks and ambushes and commando raids and that sort of thing isn’t so much that it gives some critical advantage when things appear to be at their bleakest, or even so much that it makes for a more engaging story (although that strikes me as true enough) but rather so the poor blighters caught up in whatever conflict seems to rule the day can dispense with all these speeches and formalities and flag waving and simply get to the fighting.

I’m all for tradition and good form when it comes to things like cooking or brewing or respecting one’s morning ritual and this includes having the decency to not visit before noon unless on very urgent business, but the idea that decorum should come dangerously close to consuming the event itself has always struck me as one of those odd things that no one cares to question for superstitious reasons. I believe in Japan the various preparations and rituals for sumo generally outlast the actual match itself by an order of ten to one. What I mean to say is, if grandma’s recipe for brambleberry muffins calls for a certain amount of flour and sugar and it’s delivered the goods for a century or more, then by all means “carry on tradition.” On the other hand if we move from the hallowed domain of the kitchen and examine this notion of “carrying on tradition” in the realm of competitive games and public exhibitions, the matter takes on a far more unsettling quality. For consider that one is expected to sit through three speeches, two songs, and a prayer for said event simply because it is de rigueur for the occasion. Now further mull over on how injurious all this pomp is when the great tournament in question is designed chiefly by menacing old aunts and other such busybodies to enslave bright and intrepid young oni to the tyranny of the petticoat. Then ponder the absurdity that if one were to ask why this number of songs, speeches, and other incantations is required that the default answer from some gray-haired, cane-bound oni will be, “because four is too many and two speeches not enough” or some other bit of circular chicanery. Well then, the right and sensible thing to do is to just chuck custom and convention in the dust bin and say, “ready, set, go!”

However, as we were surrounded, quite literally, with those who would undoubtedly view such a novel solution as an assault upon virtue itself, there we stood as Mayor Hornesworth, now coming to the end of his first speech, paused for applause after saying something like, “And doesn’t my great flaming heart fill with pride and joy to see such a great gathering of vigorous and happy youths in our fair town, on this day of the Oni Youth Games!” There was another bit about how he never tires of seeing the fine people of Stonesgurgle enjoying the simple pleasures of country life and how fortunate we were in our long and storied history to be blessed with such fine weather and at this point I cannot precisely recall what the finishing line was because I began to get that dizzy and dozy feeling that always seems to accompany lengthy speeches.

Well, at long last, round one had completed and the Stonegurgle Symphony and accompanying choir had begun to sing, “The Fair River’s Edge” being one of the official “town medleys.” At this point in the proceedings the various relations had somehow uncovered our formation and there was a hushed bit of hobnobbing and “how have you been” and various exchanges of “you really must come by for tea some afternoon” along with entirely undue amounts of “my the lads have gotten so big,” and not a few sinister quotations of, “No more gallivanting,” and the “Days of idyll bachelorhood shall soon be left behind,” and other menacing sayings of wretched adults. Truly, the manner in which progenitors take delight in the sufferings of their sons is one of the great abominations of the yokai world, though I suspect things in the realm of mankind are much the same. As the song drew to a close and the crowd, out of sheer politeness, joined the rest of the choir by half-mouthing and half-signing the final chorus of “And shall we meet again at the river’s edge,” Mayor Hornesworth called for more applause, which he never could seem to get enough of, and then began his second speech in earnest wherein he would announce the Goal for this year’s great tag tournament.

A hush fell over the crowd and one of the stodgier and decidedly rotund members of the “Planning and Events Committee” stepped forward – well I suppose lurched forward would be more accurate. I don’t know if you’ve ever noticed but there is another aspect of “critical mass” that also seems to accompany these kinds of events. However, this kind is the heavyish, fleshy sort of “mass” that invariably accompanies some figurehead. For some reason, they are always called upon for some form of physical exertion they are clearly not accustomed to, and there is a great deal of effort required for the start up phase of any forward motion and from then on, apparently sheer momentum does most of the work. At any rate, this gray haired and well-fed she oni accelerated towards Mayor Hornesworth before turning to face the crowd and offer a very modest bow. Well, that is it would’ve been a very modest bow had her proportions had allowed for it, but instead it rather gave the impression of a mother hen sort of nestling into her neck feathers before a midday snooze, “But, first let us offer our sincere thanks to Mrs. Thundershanks and all the devoted members of the Stonegurgle Planning and Events Committee without whom this great day of festivity and competition would not be possible,” said Mayor Hornesworth, gesturing broadly to the crowd to conjure up an appropriate amount of applause for this great effort.

It seems as though whenever applause has to be goaded out of an audience that there is the uncomfortable uncertainty of when one can stop clapping. By the same token, the cessation of applause must, in turn, be requested and it’s not quite so easy to say “when” to a large audience, so everyone is left clapping and looking about furtively to see who will be the first to stop and from here take their own cue to cease reddening their palms. Sensing this awkward, languishing applause, Mayor Honresworth, made a kind of fluttering gesture with his hands to signal that the aged members of the Planning and Events Committee had been satisfactorily lauded for their services and then, with great flair and theatricality added, “Mrs. Thundershanks, the envelope please!” I am not sure when or how the usage of envelopes became the standard means of revealing the winner of some competition whenever it wasn’t obvious by some clear set of established rules. I mean, as far as I’m aware there are no envelopes used in baseball – though I must admit the sport has always befuddled me greatly in terms of how point are allotted and there are so many numbers employed it’s not always clear who is winning the match. Perhaps in games that drag on for too long it would be better to have a kind of envelope system. I suspect a sport like golf would take far less time and require far less counting if one could rely on a committee to select a winner.

At any rate, while the rest of the audience waited with baited breath, the fine members of the League of Liberty all shared an impish grin, for we knew what was to come. Though, some of the devilish schadenfreude was taken out of the moment as Mayor Honresworth, who had extended his hand in a dramatic gesture was left waiting for a quite a few moments. It is often said that “stage time” proceeds more quickly than, well, than “regular time” or whatever the appropriate term is, but regardless of the time standard one chooses to employ, there was the unavoidable sense that perhaps the proceedings had hit a snag as the mayor stood there empty handed. This was further evidenced when Mrs. Thundershanks began frantically searching about her person and going so far as to somewhat indelicately plunging her hands down her blouse, evidently looking to retrieve the envelope in question.

Mayor Hornesworth began to perspire to such an extent that even from our position several rows back from the grandstand it was visible upon his brow, and thrust his hand out even more dramatically than before, like a magician hoping to produce the envelope by sheer force of will. Mrs. Thundershanks, realizing the gravity of the situation decided to take more drastic measures and began leaping up and down with such vigor as to defy logic given her considerable heft, attempting with all her might to dislodge the envelope from her garments. This not only seemed to test the structural integrity of the grandstand, but also the ability for the townsfolk to conceal their bemusement with polite discretion as the first few peels of giggling from youngsters, who could bear the spectacle no longer, began to give way. Following this, all hope for decorum was ultimately lost when one impatient elderly oni from one of the front rows shouted, “Oh, never mind the blasted envelope, just tell us already!” This was indeed the breaking point and for the next few minutes uproarious laughter ruled the day.

At this point, one of the fife-horn players from the Stongurgle Symphony spied something which looked awfully like an envelope or at least something “envelope-shaped” was protruding from the ribbon fastened to Mrs. Thundershanks’ straw hat. The hat had, miraculously, managed to stay firmly affixed to her skull despite all her violent dancing about the stage.

The next few moments were rather like one of those old silent comedy films. As verbal communication was quite impossible amidst the cacophonous din of the crowd, through a series of exaggerated gestures the keen sighted musician, along with support from the now thoroughly embarrassed town official managed at least to inform the rotund representative from the Planning and Events Committee to remove her hat. This was not as straightforward or as speedy a process as one might have hoped. Several dangerous looking barbs had to be removed in a very specific procedure, inciting further laughter from the audience, but at last the cranial accessory was removed and the envelope-like-object was revealed to be the very prize in question.

The audience roared with renewed vigor as Mayor Honresworth said, “It’s all right now folks, we’ve got it now!” Slowly order returned to the scene as the faithful town residents waited in rapt anticipation for what we poor soldiers of fortune had known months ago. “This year’s goal, or Sanctuary for those of us with a bit more grey upon our heads, for the Youth Oni Games” he said, milking the suspense for all it was worth, “shall be the top of Hardtooth Hill!” At this there was a rush of applause, more of relief than genuine excitement over the announcement. Without further ado, Mayor Hornesworth continued, eager to move past this embarrassing episode, “Participants, the time has arrived to gird yourselves for the competition! Young men, don your sashes, young ladies gather in your formations, and then, parents, friends, and all the good people of Stonegurgle, let us all join together and march in merriment and song to Bramberry Fields for the start of the great tag tournament!” “The Envelope Shuffle,” as the incident came to be known in later days, had mercifully cut the finale speech short and our illustrious town leader signaled to the band to begin, “The March of 10,000 Merry Feet” as the ceremony began in earnest.

I wouldn’t go so far as to describe what happened next as a stampede of cattle, for cattle are – or so I’m told by those who raise them – generally a bit more orderly and swift when it comes to a stampede. And as I mentioned before, once there reaches a critical mass of oni there seems to be a kind of general sense of propriety when it comes to direction attention towards fixed point. However, as soon as music accompanies the activity in question, it seems to have a discombobulating effect past a certain threshold of responsibility. I think it would be better described as a parade being conducted amidst an earthquake that grows gradually more intense. You know, everyone doing there best at first but forces of nature gradually unraveling orderliness by sheer power. You see, the head of the procession consists of the Mayor and various esteemed members of town and their respective entourages, thereafter followed by the Stonegurgle Symphony and Marching Band, then come the participants (including our intrepid band of brothers), and finally the sprawling drove of spectators.

Imagine the first few cars of a great express train filled with passengers who take their jobs most seriously and are in great earnest to get to their destination on time, then a few reluctant cars behind in tow that are in no great hurry but are obligated to reach their destination, then a series of cars wherein both passengers and crew for that matter are far more interested in reveling and carousing and have decided the thing to do is decouple the cars from the rest of the poor blighters and stuffed-shits and proceed to the destination at their leisure in a great drunken romp. This, I hope, gives at least a partial impression of the “march” in question.

After a flurry of “best of luck” and “be careful now,” and the occasional and always obnoxious, “Time for doffing boyish days and donning manly ways!” from the various gathered friends and relatives we managed to regroup. I spied Charry having some difficulty affixing his bachelor’s sash and offered a hand, while Clubby descried us from afar and, after offering a quick “Ho!” managed to swallow an entire meat bun whole before jogging over. Last but not least, came F.F., who appeared to have simply materialized out of thin air, all business as usual. Omitting his customary three coughs he said with great severity, “Gentlemen, the day of battle is at hand. Let us all remember our training, and send the enemy to Hades!” “Here, here!” I rejoined. “Where’s Hades?” asked Charry. “It’s an expression, Charry,” sighed F.F. “Yeah, it’s just a confession!
