On the American distaste for “Feet-Ball”
It has come to my attention that many people – from a spectator’s position that is – are enthralled with the FIFA World Cup, a “soccer tournament” of sorts in which national teams from nearly every conceivable country or territory on earth (excluding Antarctica which, despite it being a continent of considerable size, has no representation at the event– presumably because it is too cold to play any sports and it would be impractical to train and field a team of emperor penguins or Weddell seals. Though a true man of spirit and vision could, with the right team and necessary funding, make this dream a reality) vigorously compete against each other for a comically small trophy.
Aka-Oni:
I often hear Japanese people remark that, “Americans don’t care about soccer, right?” with a trace of hesitancy in their voice. Again, gentle readers, there are no need for formalities here. In general, you are quite right in this assumption, though perhaps some clarification is necessary. A better phrasing might be, “Americans, in general, are more interested in other sports.” In particular, Americans prefer football (known as “hand-egg” in crude online discourse) and baseball.” Well, you say to yourself, “this is sort of what I meant.” Naturally. The American fondness for athletic competition is well established and various “ball sports,” are very popular indeed. In fact, these activities are popular to such a staggering extent that great efforts and great sums of money are expended not only to provide the fanbase with ever-present stimulation of the sporting events in question, but also in the training, development, and support of the athletes. Yes, you might say, “I understand all this but, why is soccer not what comes to mind when one thinks of America. Is it because your team is bad? Is it because other sports are more fun to watch?”
Truthfully, dear reader, I don’t particularly know if the American team is good or bad, or just average. I also genuinely can’t apprehend why watching a sport is fun any more than one watching how crows toy will toy with bits of garbage for minutes on end. Why do they do this? Perhaps to gauge whether it is suitable material to build a nest, or perhaps it’s simply fun? Hard to say as I am neither human nor crow. Being a simple Oni, this is beyond the scope of my appreciation. However, if you’ll grant a slight change of postulation and let the inquiry be, “Why don’t you (Americans) like soccer as much as other sports?” then I believe I can be of service.
Diving.
While it’s true that our own professional soccer league may have arrived rather late when compared with our football and baseball leagues, I think this is of secondary importance. In the same vein, I think the fact that we didn’t have a “Captain Tsubasa” or similar work of immense cultural importance, to kindle a youthful fascination with the sport, is of relatively little influence. No, if one wishes to understand in a single expression why Americans have a general distaste for “feet-ball” and its peculiarities, one must look at the unnecessary theatrics of the sport, or to put it bluntly what is called, “diving.”
Now, Americans are no stranger to spectacle and, though we have yet to rival the expressiveness and intensity of Kabuki, great flamboyant actions and accompanying melodramatic wailings are very much a part of the greater tapestry of American entertainment. That said, this is found to be in very poor taste when it encroaches upon the spirit of athletic competition. Imagine the state of some poor American fan, attempting to enjoy this strange ball-kicking sport with some European friends as he witnesses as typical “diving” incident.
American Spectator: “I thought this was a sporting event, but it would appear that the mid-fielder is reenacting the “O, Happy Dagger!” moment from the final scenes of Shakespeare’s Romeo and Juliet. Oh wait, now the referee is holding up a special card. This one is red. Oh, I can tell by the crowd’s reaction that card is the least desirable color of card. Well, hopefully someone can rescue this poor midfielder who clearly has suffered a career-ending injury and- OH WAIT. THIS IS INCREDIBLE. HE IS TOTALLY FINE NOW. WHAT A MIRACULOUS RECOVERY, TRULY THIS RED CARD MUST CONTAIN SOME ANCIENT HEALING MAGIC. IF ONLY OUR AMERICAN HEALTHCARE SYSTEM HAD THESE MAGICAL EUROPEAN RED CARDS THEN SURELY OUR LAND WOULD BE A PARADISE ON EARTH.”
Gentle readers, this is all completely unacceptable. I understand, of course, there is an element of strategy here and using this sort of thespian cunning can be seen as an important “meta-play” within the confines of the game, and yet, even a boorish Oni like myself finds this in very bad taste. You might say, “Yes, but Japanese players do not do this,” and I would be glad to take you at your word. However, the fact remains that these ridiculous antics are a near-constant affair and, most regrettably, the Japanese players have not managed to convince every soccer player on earth to have some shred of dignity.
However, this not only occurs when someone believes it would be MOST HELPFUL to fake an injury and stop play, but also any time a goal is scored. Almost without fail, the opposing team screams and cries and protests with great lamentations that the goal should not count, that the referee missed some dastardly deed by the opposing team, and that it really hurts their goal keeper’s feelings to have a goal scored on them when they are trying so very hard to prevent foals from being scored and so, in all fairness, a “do-over” is the only just solution. It would be slightly less nauseating if the referee approached this as any seasoned pre-school teacher would and issued a stern warning to the players that, “any further crying or complaining and they will have to sit out the rest of the game,” but to my knowledge this rarely occurs. If, for example, some rule was implemented wherein if you were observed to be clearly faking an injury then you (the offending player) had to wear a large “dunce cap” that read “CHEATER” in large letters for the rest of the game and that after the game ended you would have to bow your head lowly and issue a formal apology to the opposing team, your own team, the referees, and the fans that you were, “…very sorry for faking an injury and trying to gain an unfair advantage and I promise not to do it again,” then perhaps there might be hope for the sport. In addition, a second offense should be met with suspension for the rest of the season/tournament, and a third offense met with expulsion from the professional league altogether. However, I don’t believe that this would be an “easy sell,” to the players, the officials, or even the fans as it seems to be an inextricable part of the game and this – above all else – is something most Americans simply cannot abide.
Enjoy the world cup, friends!
And if you asked Americans how they might “improve the game,” the exchange would probably go something like this:
American: “Perhaps if the game allowed tackling and then the injuries would, doubtless, be very real!”
European Soccer fan: “You are describing football.”
American: “I am? Well, what about more referees to keep an eye on things, and then having only short bursts of play instead of just punting the ball back and forth…”
European Soccer fan: “This too, is a description of football.”
American: “Is it really? Hrmmm…well, what if you could also throw the ball at certain points, like maybe just one player other than the goal keeper I mean, but only under certain circumstances and, of course, you could also tackle him-”
European Soccer fan: “That is called a quarterback. Football.”
American: “Well goodness it sounds like football is a much better sport, doesn’t it?”
European Soccer fan: “I…yes… sure, fine, it does sound that way.”
“What a splendid land this is, and how lovely are its people! Fear not, I promise not to eat anyone!”
