On Mate Selection and Matrimony (and how to avoid both) Part 6

Greetings dear readers, and today we continue the tale of the “Thelinda Thornegrove” affair as the fateful day of the Youth Oni Games draws near.

So, we continued like that for several more weeks, and yet the training never seemed to get much easier. Although it eventually got to the point wherein we weren’t constantly tripping over the cursed jump rope and, after thoughtful comparisons of the instructional images from “Exercises for the Energetic Oni,” we were reasonably convinced that our form in doing “squats” and “pushups” and what have you was, more or less, spot on. The running, however, continued to the be the bane of our existence, especially for yours truly and poor old F.F. Yes, despite our diligence, we seemed only to improve incrementally, but “every little bit counts,” or so we told ourselves amidst bouts of labored breathing and profuse sweating. Then one afternoon as we collapsed onto the grass just beneath the old oak at the top of Hardtooth Hill, I observed the following curious phenomenon.

“I am of the opinion,” I said, gasping for air while Clubby, taking a soothing chug of dandelion tea seeming only slightly winded and Charry, preoccupied with a rather sizable snail crawling along the base of the great oak, seemed hardly to have broken a sweat listened on, “that…there is perhaps some Tanuki trickery at work with this hill.” Clubby, wiping the sweat from his brow looked puzzled, “What do you mean?” he asked. “Well…” I said, still unable to catch my breath or move another muscle, “I don’t know how else to account for it but, don’t you think that this hill seems to be getting steeper and path up the cursed mound seems to be getting longer, no matter how many times we run up the blighted thing.” Charry, who was now wearing the snail atop his head in a very unconventional sort of fashion, walked over and gingerly tossed me a canteen which, owing to my exhausted state I caught squarely in the face. Nonetheless, I was grateful for the gesture as getting up and retrieving the liquid myself was quite out of the question.

やはりF.F.

“Thank you, Charry,” I said gulping down the beverage which may as well have been the water of life itself. “Don’t mention it, chum,” he said now placing his impromptu mollusk chapeau among a nice collection wildflowers. “But you know, there haven’t been any Tanuki in these parts for something like 500 years or so my grandfather says. So, if there’s anything like that it must’ve happened quite recently I should think.”

At this point F.F., who was having a rough go of it this afternoon, reached the top of the hill completely spent and collapsed face-down on the grass nearby. Charry, always the helpful pal, tossed him his canteen as well. He too, caught it directly in the old bean, but as his face was buried in the grass, faired a bit better than me.

“Thank…thank you, Charry,” he said, mustering the strength to roll over and take a lifesaving sip.

“No trouble, chum,” he replied.

At this point Clubby came and sat down too and looking askance at F.F. noted, “Feeling all right? You’re usually last of course, but this is slow even by your standards.”

“Don’t be so hard on him, Clubby” I said, at last managing to sit up. “Oh no, I just meant, if you’re sick you should rest and all that.” he clarified, not wishing to douse a friend’s spirit. “All for One and One for All” and all that, you know.

“I am a bit out of form today, yes,” said F.F., finally returning to a reasonable amount of oxygen supply, “as I was up a bit late last night…” he paused to take another gulp before continuing, “…devising the second phase of our plan.” “Stout fellow!” Clubby said, giving him a slap on the back which was rather ill-timed as he had just taken another sip and caught it precisely down the wrong pipe. After a brief fit of coughing and sputtering like a boiled over tea kettle and a few more medicinal slaps on the back, F.F. regained himself. “I am all right now, thank you!” he said, coming to his senses in a tone that showed more than a bit of perturbation.

Charry, who had climbed to the lowest branch of the oak tree and was hanging upside down by his legs, swaying to and fro in the breeze, resumed the topic at hand, “Something about supplies and, you know, tactics and all that, after we meet at the HQ and before we split up on the day of the games, that was what you were saying before Clubby nearly drowned you, right?” he asked in his typical insouciant manner.

“I said I was sorry!” retorted Clubby with some indignation. “Quite all right,” said F.F., having restored his usual cool demeanor, and then looking over to Charry remarked, “And…yes that’s more or less exactly what I was saying.” At that moment something occurred to me. “I say Charry, hanging upside down like that seems to have, well, kind of sloshed the memories in your brain, which are usually scattered all over the place, right to forefront,” I said, astonished at his sudden burst of perspicacity. “I bet you’d have sailed right through to middle school if you could just, well, suspend yourself like that during class.”

Charry, performing a very neat half aerial somersault and dropping to his feet said, “You think so? Yes, I suppose that makes sense, but I bet Mrs. Fangbottom wouldn’t allow it though, she gets sore enough when people put their feet upon their desks, you know?”

He then proceeded to vault into a handstand and, using his hands like one might spin a top, spun his cranium against the grass to remove the slime trail left by his gastropod visitor. He did so with such poise that it struck me this was not the first occasion he had to remove snail residue from his head. Sadly, it’s precisely this sort of specialized knowledge that is never tested in school, and thus the lad’s intellectual merits had gone almost entirely overlooked.

“Anyway,” said F.F. bringing things round again, “we’ll discuss this tomorrow at HQ.”
“What’s wrong with right now?” asked Clubby, eager to learn the next phase of our operations.
“For one I haven’t brought my materials and two, security. Following procedure prevents leaking of sensitive information,” said F.F., in the spirit of a man who really knows the value of order. “He’s quite right, Clubby and…and I am too exhausted to focus on a discussion of a, well, a strategic nature or indeed anything else for that matter,” I said, feeling every bit of excess movement right down to my bones. “In fact I may just sleep here for the night.”

“I think it’s going to rain though,” said Clubby pointing to a group of particularly menacing looking rainclouds. “Good observation, First Lieutenant and Scout Master Hardhorne,” I said sitting up and wishing that Clubby hadn’t insisted on such a long title for his official rank in our tiny band of freedom loving brothers in arms. “In lieu of the inclement weather, I propose we beat a hasty retreat back to our respective barracks and rendezvous at HQ at 1600 hours tomorrow. All in favor?” All members raised their hands. “Motion carries,” I said and we began our descent. Upon reaching the edge of the village we exchanged formal farewells of, “Until the morrow, good gentlemen,” with accompanying “Hurrahs!” and parted ways.

The first evening star had not yet risen nor had the sun sunk completely below the horizon as the storm clouds swirled above and seemed ready to unleash their furious deluge any minute. Well, as refreshing as the idea of cold shower sounded as I was still all cloyed with sweat and dirt, I didn’t like the idea of it out in the open without a nice hot bath to jump into afterward. So, despite my aching muscles, I changed gears from my preferred gentle stroll to more of a brisk trot and all the while had some gnawing sense of dread at the pit of my stomach that I couldn’t quite place. As I rounded past the old mill and down Dryad Lane I distinctly thought I heard a strange sort of giggling sound. Not thinking much of it at the moment, I pressed on eager to get home. Passing by the post office, the sky continued to darken and again I heard it, more of a cackle this time, something seriously ominous about it too. “It couldn’t be the amefuri kozo,” I thought to myself, because Constable Grimgnasher, our local sheriff of sorts, would’ve shooed them off. The general consensus was that despite being overly enthusiastic regarding his duties concerning bicycles on pedestrian walkways, and the legally required length for leashes on Koma Inu, he was very good about keeping mischievous yokai out of the village – maintaining the peace and all that.

And he did so most of the time without so much as having to raise the stupendously large club he kept in his belt as one scowl or even a raised eyebrow from his ghastly visage was sufficient to put just about any living creature to flight. So, with this in mind, and feeling a bit uneasy now as the strange cackling sound continued unabated and a bit louder than before, I thought it judicious to quicken my pace. I was just about home free as I neared the bakery at the corner of Cobblestone Court and Linnet Lane, and then with the old homestead within sight I heard it again, nearer now and unmistakable in it’s dreadful “piano dropped on a cat’s tail” shrillness.

“Oh, no, surely it can’t be her,” I thought turning to look over my shoulder just as the hairs on my neck began to stand upright, sensing the impending doom. I caught the faintest glimpse of a devilish silhouette from the alley between the bakery and the New Oni Gazette stand, and had just drawn in a sharp breath to let out a desperate yelp of my own, but it was too late – tragically too late.

In the next instant I felt as though I was hit by a hippopotamus launched from a canon and found myself tackled and pinned to the ground in the blink of an eye. Dizzied and disoriented, I looked up helplessly and beheld the horrid, gleaming eyes of Thelinda Thornegrove. Now, at this moment, like any good soul endowed with even a modicum of what I’m told scientists now call “self-preservation,” my first instinct was to cry for mercy, or maybe just cry in general as it seemed the only prudent thing to do when one is pinned to the ground, inches away from a ravenous monster.

“Hello, darling!” she roared, like a lioness who had just pounced upon a helpless gazelle that foolishly strayed from the pack and now must resign himself to a most gruesome fate. Yet, somewhere deep within me, a hidden fire was kindled and I managed to eek out, “Oh…He…hello, Thelinda. You sure gave me a start.” It wasn’t much in the way of defiant boldness but it was something at least.

The earsplitting laugh filled the air once more and, on my word of honor dear readers, practically drowned out the peel of thunder that tore through the sky, announcing my fate to the heavens. “Oh good, I meant to!” she said drawing closer still.

“Out for a walk..or…or something? I thought you had spear throwing practice today?” I said, trying to appear brave in the face of sheer disaster. “I just finished an hour ago, but my you do know me well, don’t you. Dear Papa and I have been out running errands and I happened to spy you on the edge of town. I told Papa to head to bakery without me. He’s picking up a cake for grandma’s birthday this evening.” she said, not budging an inch from her prey. “Oh, how…how very nice,” I said, my voice cracking and squeaking at the most inopportune time. In this moment, I imagined I knew very intimately what a mouse caught by a cat must feel like, as the wretched feline decides if she will simply put the poor devil out of his misery and devour him, or if she wants a bit of fun first.

“You know, darling, I’ve been watching you the past few days,” said Thelinda with a fiendish look of glee. “Great heavens,” I thought, “she couldn’t have been spying on us could she?” So, mustering all my courage, I tried to wear the mask, “Oh..umm…whatever do you mean?” Again, the maniacal hooting made the humble of thunder seem as pleasant as a sparrow’s chirping. “Oh you can’t fool me silly! I’ve seen you and your friends running about, and jumping, and doing your exercises over there on Hardtooth Hill. You and that slowpoke Fangbreaker, and crybaby Clubsmyte and umm…oh, you know, the dumb one who’s always playing about with insects and other nasty things.” she said, raising her claw to her chin as she pondered. The gesture, if performed by one who did not inspire terror in the hearts of the great sea monsters of the deep, could have even been considered charming.

“You mean Charry?” I said, hoping this bit of helpful information may satisfy her bloodlust and that I might slip away to see another dawn. “Yes, that’s the one!” she said, smiting her thigh with a great blow that probably would’ve knocked me unconscious had it been directed towards me.

“I know what you’ve been up to.” she said in a sinister, knowing manner. “Good gods,” I thought, “The beast is onto us! How much does she know?” Panic stricken though I was, above all else I knew that I must not let the men down, and so I strove my utmost to deceive the enemy.

“Oh…do you really…just a bit of fun you know. Just playing around, working up a good sweat and all that.” I stammered, but my act was not convincing, as we are a proud and honest clan and there are no thespians among us. “Darling, you’re just adorable when you lie, for you do it so poorly.” she replied with a sickening grin. “Really, it’s all very touching, but there’s no need to be embarrassed.” she said, tousling my hair in the most menacing manner.

“You must know how much I hate to see a good competition squandered, because I love a good challenge and so rarely get the chance for one. It’s not easy being the best, you know. And despite the fact that you’re nearly the slowest one in our class and can barely lift a boulder meant for tots, you’ve been training your heart out, all to make the hunt more interesting for me,” she said, her eyes narrowing in the most appalling manner as the word “hunt” escaped her lips. It was a look that would have curdled the blood of a thousand oni warriors in the days of the great Yokai Wars, and I still tremble to this day when the baneful memory comes to mind.

The beast continued with her torments, “Why, it’s one of the nicest things anyone’s ever done for me…” she said, starting to get most uncomfortably close with an unmistakable amorous quality in her voice. “Ah, such tender devotion from my beloved beau. I think I really must kiss you,” she said just as the raindrops began to fall.

And, at this moment, dear readers, I wondered what terrible fool-headed thing I must have done to offend one of the great elder yokai or one of the more vengeful gods to deserve such intolerable cruelty whilst in the prime and purity of my youth. It was too much for one oni too endure.

When, all of a sudden, as if an answer to prayer, a voice even more deafening than the vile huntress seemed to shatter earth asunder, “Thelinda! What are you doing to that poor boy? Come over to the coach and get out of the rain now, child!” It was none other than the great paterfamilias himself, that champion of champions, that savior of hapless young oni males, Brawnhand Thornegrove, standing in the awning of the bakery. “Oh double-drat!” said Thelinda, in what she probably assumed was a whisper, meaning it could’ve only been heard a block or so away, “That’s Papa. I really must go now, darling, ta-ta!” she said with a devious flick of the fingers indicating her parting. “Coming right away, Papa!” she bellowed, returning to the standard “six blocks away in the middle of a hurricane” volume,

and in the next moment had bounded away like a jackrabbit, scampering over to the bakery just as the Thornegrove family chauffeur scurried to the corner, umbrella in hand. In a most obsequious and awkward manner, he took the cake from father Thornegrove, and guided the pair to their impossibly long coach. Just as he was climbing into the backseat with his pestilential daughter mercifully in-tow, the fearsome old wrestler gave me a sort of quizzical up-and-down look as I managed to stand up, get a hold of myself and wave a most feeble goodbye. After that, the downpour began in earnest and the massive coach shot off like a streak of black lightning.

Finding myself most relieved to be among the living, I took off for the humble homestead, as the rain came down in buckets. I burst through the door, got out of my soaking clothes, and flung myself on the floor near the fire, tears of joy welling up and thanking all the ancient yokai and good gods I could recall that I was alive and unsoiled by the cursed she-devil.

Until next time!

Yet, this sense of elation was all too short lived, for I had to face the unpleasant fact that the enemy was now aware of our movements and only three months remained before the games. I should have to report this to headquarters, and no telling how the men would react. It was a very dangerous business. As the storm roared on, I was filled with a sense of purpose, for I knew that I must steel my heart to face the enemy and count on my brothers in arms to see the job through. Staring into the fire, and not even touching the lovely cup of cocoa my dear mother had made, I forged a new resolve to fight for freedom. “If it’s a challenge you want, Thelinda, you’ve got it,” I whispered to myself as another peel of thunder tore through the night sky.

“What a splendid land this is, and how lovely are its people! Fear not, I promise not to eat anyone!”
