On Mate Selection and Matrimony (and how to avoid both) Part 7

Greetings dear readers, and today we continue to the “Thelinda Thornegrove” affair, and learn of the impressive machinations of old F.F., and the courage of Clubby.

“Well, gentlemen, that’s the whole story in a nutshell,” I said with as much dignity as I could muster sat down among the troops. One of those heavy, oppressive silences filled the air, and even little Hornsbane had stopped munching away on his bramblejam tart. Things seemed to be rather on the up and up for weeks now so the report of Thelinda’s sinister spying had not only dampened our spirits, but had made what seemed practically a surefire escape now seem perilous and uncertain. Clubby was practically trembling, so unnerved was he by the revelation, and F.F. had let out several “hrmm” or perhaps “mmmm” or some general rumbling sound of that nature during my recounting of the unpleasant episode, but nothing in the way of insightful commentary.

やがてF.F.

Only Charry seemed to take the thing in stride, but he was most preoccupied by a rather large earthworm that, evidently, had to flee to high ground during last night’s deluge and was making his way gingerly towards our makeshift “chart table.” Breaking the silence at last, F.F. stood up and, doing his sincerest imitation of what commander of soldiers should probably sound like (that is if the books and histories and legends are all true, and of course they are) he said, “All in all, it’s not good, but the situation may not be as black as it seems. You escaped the enemy clutches and did not reveal the location of our secret base. As our Master Sergeant of General Operations and Supplies, you couldn’t have done more,” he said resolutely. I felt quite encouraged by the gesture and saluted sharply, “Thank you, F.F., I mean Major Strategist Flamehouse.” Returning the salute, F.F. turned to address the men, coughing once or twice to gain Charry’s attention who, after carefully placing his annelid companion on a soft, relatively dry bit of soil, also saluted and sat down with the rest of us.

“Thankfully, the enemy was not able to ascertain the particulars of our planned escape route, nor the second phase of our stratagem which I will now share. Still, gentlemen, we must keep our wits about us and take extra precaution. If Thelinda knows, there’s a good chance the other girls know too,” said F.F. pacing back and forth with his hands folded behind his back. “I propose we move our P.T. grounds to another location and change the meeting time as well. All in favor?” All members raised their hands. “Motion carries,” said F.F., “now, I think meeting in the morning before school would be best, agreed?” Initially, I didn’t like the idea of rising so very
early, but wartime demands being what they are, consented that this would probably be for the best.

We decided on Clubby’s house as our new “training grounds” because it had a rather large yard and also a cracking tire swing which we thought surely must hold some strategic value though we couldn’t determine exactly what kind. In addition, we noted that as it would be inconvenient and perhaps even a bit presumptuous to ask Clubby’s mother to make breakfast for everyone we would pool our resources for breakfast rolls at the local bakery after our training. This most welcome addendum did much to take the sting out of having to rise with the meadowlarks as it were. I don’t know about you but rising early unless for some serious emergency such as the house being afire or a baby’s birth, or a particularly luxurious breakfast, always struck me as most uncivilized. Hence, I found those early risers who wish to compound this unpleasantness with strenuous exercise to be of a particularly bizarre masochistic type whom invariably are compelled to share their unprepossessing fetish with anyone and everyone regardless of its relation to the topic at hand.
“Oh, that’s too bad about your grandmother being ill, by the way I got up at five am today for 10 mile run.” Most unwholesome and unwarranted, mind you. At any rate, once this business of the training schedule was settled, F.F. began to delve into more pertinent matters.

“And now, I think we should discuss phase two of our operations,” said F.F. unfurling a particularly detailed map with various drawings with extensive commentary and footnotes. It may astonish the reader to learn that F.F., while a most capable oni in his capacity for stratagems and clever contrivances, couldn’t work up the slightest bit of motivation when it came to applying any such ingenuity to his schoolwork and, while expending the absolute minimum effort required, was decidedly a middle-of-the-pack sort of pupil when it came to his studies. This is so often the way in life, that some of the brightest chaps you come upon have their sense of “get-up-and-go” utterly crippled when forced to attend some tedious lecture in a stuffy room for hours upon end. Why, a little change of scenery, with a more concrete objective, and look the marvels they can produce. I suppose this must also account for the fact that war seems to spur a kind of burst of innovation while peacetime has a much more “steady as she goes,” sort of approach. All in all, I think I’d still prefer the peacetime pace as it strikes me as far less strenuous, but there are those us made for times of great strife, and F.F. was surely one such fellow.

“Now, you’ve all learned your routes, so there’s no change there, but as they say, no plan survives contact with the enemy.”

“Who says that?” asked Charry, seeming to take an avid interest.
“Well, you know the…the famous generals and so forth, I should think,” replied F.F., a bit perturbed at being interrupted. “Oh, I see,” said Charry, “Well, I don’t know but I’d suppose they’d know, you know?”

“Quite right,” I said with a nod.

“If I may continue,” said F.F. with more than a trace of irritation, “We must prepare for the contingency that one of us may be captured or even, although I don’t like to mention it, fall in defense of freedom. We’ve also got to square the fact that our training alone may prove insufficient to defeat our foe. Hence, we shall need a bit of cloak and dagger to increase our chances of success. Now, on the day of the games, after we meet at HQ, we’ll only have about five minutes to gather round, get equipped and move out.”

“Equipped? Do you mean snacks so we won’t get tired during the race?” asked Clubby.
“I was just coming to that,” said F.F. gesturing to a series of diagrams, “No, I don’t think we’ll have time for snacks, but we will have time to change clothes.”
“Change clothes?” I asked, somewhat perplexed. “Is that allowed?” F.F., flashed a smile, “Yes, that’s just where we have an edge. I must admit, I hadn’t thought of it until Charry asked the other day if there was a rulebook of sorts.”

“Really? Well done, chum!” I said, greatly encouraged that the lads were pulling together and the sudden complication of Thelinda’s dastardly espionage hand’t disheartened them too much.

“I figured they must have something like that, because having to memorize all the rules would be too troublesome,” said Charry, clearly glad to have contributed to the plan, albeit accidentally.

“Well, it turns out there is…” F.F. reached into his rucksack and produced a most prodigious tome entitled, “A Brief History of Oni Competition – Formal Regulations and Bylaws Volume II” and plunked the text onto our chart table with an impressive thud. “Gracious, if this is only volume two, and if this is considered “brief,” I shudder to think what the “unabridged” version might look like,” I said as F.F., opened to a bookmarked page that read “Youth Oni Games – Rules and Regulations” in very official looking red letters.

Clearing his throat with three separate and distinct grunts, as was his custom, F.F. began to read the passage:

“Male participants may, under no circumstances save to preserve life and limb – the validity of said claim as to be determined by the judge’s panel – remove their “bachelor’s sash” or alter its position on the upper torso of the body so as to provide an unfair advantage in defending the participant’s ribbons from pursuers, see page 729 under heading 1a for rules regarding placement and proper donning procedures.” F.F. paused, performed aforementioned throat-clearing ritual again, and continued at a steady, slumber inducing pace. Little Hornesbane yawned mightily and arranged his rucksack into a sort of make shift pillow at this juncture. I’m ashamed to say I was most sympathetic despite the demonstrably insubordinate behavior of our young “super ultra mega private.” It was quite the dry fanfare indeed.

F.F. seemed to grow drowsy himself into the third paragraph or so which said something about “shall not exceed three thumb’s length from the edge of the waist…” and then, not wishing to fall under the spell himself, skipped ahead a few pages and began again in earnest, “Never mind that, here’s the important bit.” After one final throat clearing, he highlighted the following passage, “Participant’s uniforms must be tunics of standard fit and custom in accordance with the traditional fashion of the Youth Oni Games – see figure 2c for details – and must not be of excessive length in order to prevent injury, nor should they be of too heavy a fabric to prevent heat exhaustion, and may not interfere with the aforementioned regulations concerning the “bachelor’s sash.” With that F.F. gave the massive text a satisfying wrap of his knuckles nearly rousing little Hornesbane from his afternoon slumber.

“And that’s it, that’s all that’s written about uniforms. Well, there you have it! You see now, don’t you? This gives us a clear tactical advantage and what’s more, there’s no risk for disqualification if the maneuver is uncovered by the enemy, or the judges, because it’s all above board and perfectly within the rules. Even if the subterfuge fails to completely deceive the enemy, it will at least buy us some time, and throw that awful she-devil Thelinda off the trail!” he said with great enthusiasm. “Got it now?” he asked, clearing expecting a resounding reply from the troops. The response he hoped for was, however, slightly delayed. There was something very near an awkward silence before Clubby piped up and said,“Oh, I got it all right!” with great vigor. “That’s one humdinger of a scheme, F.F., I must say!” This was usually the moment wherein we’d thrust our fist to the heavens and join together in a hearty “huzzah,” but for some reason things were a bit delayed. I must confess that I saw, at least I think I saw albeit a bit hazily, the gist of what F.F. was driving at, but the finer details escaped me.

“Nope. I don’t got it,” said Charry flatly, saving me from a bit of embarrassment. “Oh, Charry, can’t you see how simple it is?” said Clubby giving him a hardy slap on the back. “No, I guess I missed what was to be gotten. How’d you get it?” he replied most perplexed. “I mean well…it’s just, as plain as can be you know?” said Clubby evasively. “No, I don’t know, because I didn’t get it. That’s why I said I don’t got it. Maybe you’d better explain how you got it so I can get it and then we’ll all have gotten it.” said Charry, seeming very satisfied with the proposed course of action. Clubby, glancing round somewhat nervously said with a forced chuckle, “Well, you see it’s like F.F. just said, the sash and the thumb’s length and…and…uniforms and tactics…and ummm…strategic ummm..movements.”

I thought it best to intervene at this juncture and save everyone a bit of face. Standing up and addressing the matter with some formality, “Major Strategist Flamehouse, I believe it would be best for all parties, including myself, if you could present the details for this no-doubt, brilliant course of action in the simplest terms possible. Put it straight, sir.” I said, saluting smartly and sitting down.

F.F. sighed a bit, as he very much enjoyed his role and the manner of expression befitting an officer and a gentlemen, but ultimately conceded. “Well, that’s not how a Chief Strategist-” “Major!” corrected Charry. “Yes, thank you,” he said rolling his eyes. “I meant to say, that’s not really how a Major Strategist should talk, but…all right.” said F.F. sulking a bit.

He took a deep breath and said, “It’s like this, chums. We race here as fast we can. Then we switch uniforms and split up. Charry switches with me, and Clubby will switch with you, since he’s the fastest. Thelinda will think you’re Clubby, and vice versa. You and Charry have the long way around, which has more cover but takes longer to reach the goal, so this will buy you time. Meanwhile, Clubby and I will play decoy and Thelinda will pursue us in the wrong direction. By the time she figures it out, you’ll be halfway to Hardtooth Hill and she’ll have no chance of catching you.”

At this moment the clouds lifted for all good men of the company. Sensing the idea had penetrated at long last, F.F. took a deep breath and then, cautiously this time, said, “Now, does everyone got it?”

“Got it.” said Charry.
“Got it!” said Clubby.
“Got it!” said I. “I say F.F., Clubby was right, that scheme’s a stroke of pure genius, Huzzah!” I cried lifting my fist and we all joined in for another round of hearty “huzzahs.”

It was splendid boost for morale, but then all of a sudden Clubby’s face grew pale having realized this principle role in “phase two” of our plan. “Wait a minute! Does…does that mean…I’ll have Thelinda chasing me?” he said, his knees going a bit wobbly.

“Yes, but only at first you see, and she’ll hardly be interested in taking your ribbons, so you’re in the clear,” said F.F. very nonchalantly. “But…but still…even so, she’ll be chasing after me and when she finds out it’s me oh…she’ll be so mad and, who knows what she’ll do!” shouted Clubby, now quite upset indeed. “She can’t kill you it’s against the rules,” said F.F. quite annoyed at this irrelevant objection. “Well she can still thrash pretty close to it I’d say!” shouted Clubby in response. “Think for a moment. The more time she spends thrashing you about, the less time she has to pursue her quarry. Why would she do something so irrational?” chided F.F. Though, I must admit I didn’t think that the words “rational behavior” and “Thelinda Thornegrove” belonged in the same sentence anymore than “square circles” or “wooden iron” or “dry water” belonged in the encyclopedia under the heading of “things that exist.”

私はF.F.

Clubby, too, was most incredulous,“That’s easy for you to say, you’ll get to keep all your teeth! I’m the one who’ll get mashed into pudding!” F.F., growing irritated, replied curtly, “Clubby, you’re the fastest, so it has to be this way. Can’t you see that?” Clubby, looked about a bit and began to stammer, “Well…yes, but…but it’s just that…” and his voice grew hoarse all of a sudden

Here again I interjected. I couldn’t stand to see a friend so distraught and all account of my cursed fate to attract the abominable affection of that monster Thelinda. “It’s all right, Clubby, don’t get upset now. Listen chums, this whole thing was my idea and you’re all in this mess because of me and my rotten luck. Why, sticking with me all this while, you’re the best friends any red-faced oni could ask for, but I don’t want Clubby to get hurt or have to face that terror alone. It was a masterful plan, F.F., your best yet, really,” I said, turning to our Major Strategist with a respectful nod. “But I can’t slink away in comfort and let one of my dear chums and a fellow officer get mauled by that hideous monster.”

The mood humble HQ seemed most dispirited once more. I cleared my throat, needing only one sort of quiet cough as I hadn’t the gravitas or eloquence of F.F. and thought one would be sufficient. I stood up straight and, beginning as formally as I could muster said, “First Lieutenant and Scout Master Hardhorne, you are hereby relieved of this special duty and shall await further instructions.”

Clubby, poor fellow began to tear up a bit, “Thank…thank you, it’s just…she’s so scary and…well,” I stretched my hand and clasped his shoulder. “It’s OK chum, no need to say anything.” F.F. nodded too, realizing that it was a bridge too far and Charry, ever cheerful in adversity, simply said, “We’ll just have to find another way, no trouble.” Little Honresbane had also woken up and upon seeing the state of his elder brother, trotted over and hugged him tightly. Clubby knew there were no hard feelings. We were like that always, our little band, All for One and One for All, and all that rot you know?

Then all of a sudden, the strangest thing happened. As if by some kind of ancient magic, the kind we had read about during the days of the Great Yokai War and always assumed was true enough perhaps with a stretch or too here and there but nonetheless true, Clubby stood up so straight and tall that he seemed to grow a few fingers length. He stopped his sobbing, patted his sibling on the head, wiped his eyes, and looked round at all of us. There was something different in his eyes just then, like he had just received some very serious instructions and was determined to carry them out come what may. “No.” he said finally, sniffling a bit and wiping his nose. “No, sir. I’ll…I’ll do my duty. I’ll run like the wind, she’ll never even lay a hand on me.”

Until next time!

Without another word we all gave Clubby the hardiest Huzzah we could muster and Charry lifted him up on his shoulders with many a shout of Huzzah to follow.
Phase two was set and the games only a few weeks away.
