On Mate Selection and Matrimony (and how to avoid both) Part 9

That afternoon there was a heavy, foreboding kind of air back at HQ, and an unspoken understanding among the men that the battle to come would prove to be our most arduous trial, and that only by winning the favor of the gods through dauntless courage could we hope to prevail. And having just seen the enemy face to face, albeit in a brief skirmish and having suffered no major casualties, there was the lingering sense of disquiet that even in the event of our victory, it may come at a heavy price. Indeed, there was the distinct impression that some of our merry band may see Elysian fields before the dawn of freedom. Furthermore, Charry was still nowhere to be found and we had started to come the conclusion that some monstrous, underhanded deed may have prevented him from attending our daily strategy meeting. Why, he could have been captured by Thelinda and she and the rest of the treacherous female scourge could be applying some arcane tortures to him at this very moment, pumping him for information. I don’t mean to imply that anyone said anything of this nature or that anything much was said at all, but it was sort of, in the air, you see. This kind of heaviness, as I’m sure you have already guessed, has the tendency to rob one of any appetite for snacks, except for Super Ultra Mega Private Hornesbane who set upon his cookies and barley tea with great intensity. Charry was last to arrive and we were all glad to see him one piece given the morning’s fracas. As he came strolling along, looking not to bothered by much he gave a brief “Ho!” and then sat down to join little Hornesbane. Just after sinking his teeth into a bramblejam tart, he looked rather quizzically at the rest of the squadron and said, “What’s wrong, chums, not hungry?”

Clubby was the first to break the silence, “Well, it’s good to see you’re still kicking about, but what on earth happened to you this morning?” “What do you mean?” said Charry in his usual, nonplussed manner.

“Well, when Thelinda took off after you we followed in pursuit to try prevent you from having your skull caved in with ballet slippers but you had vanished.” I said trying to jog his memory. “Oh that,” said Charry taking a sip of tea from this bamboo canteen, his memory sufficiently jogged, remarked, “I just climbed up the side of the chimney to the roof of the old City Hall building, I saw everyone down below and figured to just wait a bit until things calmed down.”

“You mean you were there the whole time?” asked F.F., now well appraised of the situation. “Yup, I told you no one ever looks up. I’m not sure why, but they never do,” he said taking another tart. “But where were you all afternoon, Charry, I hadn’t seen hide nor hair of you after your disappearing trick this morning.” I said, trying to get to the bottom of the matter. “I told you I didn’t disappear I was up on the…” began Charry again, not understanding my meaning before F.F. interjected in order save time, “It’s an expression. Never mind. The point is, where’d you head off to? We were about to organize a search party you know!”

Charry sat there for a moment sort of cocked his head to the side as one might expect from a confused canine and then all of a sudden sprang up full of vigor, “Oh, yes! Thank you for reminding me. That’s what I wanted to tell you all about!”

Digging into his pocket he produced a hastily folded piece of paper covered in his unmistakably atrocious penmanship. “See, I got to thinking about being pirates again the other day,” said Charry spreading out the parchment on our table. F.F. rolled his eyes in consternation and was about to launch into what believe in military terms is called a “dressing down” of poor Charry, so I decided to intervene, “Sergeant Major Stoneskin, we had already decided against this course of action months ago, if you’ll recall,” I said with as much gravity as I could muster. “Oh yes, I know, but then I was thinking about how, if anything goes wrong it’d be good to have a backup plan. So I got to thinking of how to make a backup plan a sort of…umm, well, you know, forward-up plan, or whatever the term is,” said Charry.

Admittedly we were a bit vexed as to what the opposite of a “backup” was or should be called and F.F. was now so thoroughly miffed that he simply crossed his hands behind his back and said, “Hrmmm” or “Mmmm” or some such similar sound and turned away. “See, I remembered the other day when F.F. showed us that dreadfully dull rule book and so I made a copy because I didn’t want to haul the old thing all the way here, it’s quite heavy you know.” “You made a copy of what? What on earth are you blabbing about, Charry?” said Clubby also visibly annoyed.

“Hold on men, let’s hear him out,” I said, wanting to spare any further discontent among the troops. “See, here it says,” continued Charry quite cheerfully, “…all male participants must avail themselves only of their bodily strength and swiftness of feet whilst on the field and must be moving towards the goal at all times, excepting wherein to take brief stops for respite or to avoid detection from pursuers, continued on page four-hundred-seventy-eight…” here Charry turned over the parchment and continued reading amidst a stifled groaning sound from F.F. “…while on the turf male participants may use the landscape to their advantage such that it may aid reaching the goal but are forbidden to fashion any weapons or other improvised armaments.” Charry smiled broadly, “So there you have it.”

ついにF.F.

Once again, the expectation for resounding huzzahs was instead met with cold silence. At this point F.F. could maintain his composure no longer and stated in a low and grave voice, “Sergeant Major Stoneskin, I fail to see how this is at all relevant to our overall strategy and would like to remind you that the day of battle is nearly upon us. We have no time for your dawdling and capricious escapades, sir! Time is of the essence!”

“Hear Hear!” echoed Clubby, “Of the essence, man! “

Again, Charry gave the cock-headed stare of bafflement and I determined a bit of plain speaking should be required at this juncture to avoid things becoming even more unpleasant. “I say there, Charry old chum, how’s this going to help us make good our escape? The Youth Games and the Tag Tournament are the day after tomorrow and well, this seems kind of last minute and whatnot, don’t you think?”

それにF.F.

Charry, mouth agape for a moment focused hard and then said, “Well, yes that’s why I was so busy this afternoon, I wasn’t quite sure how to manage it by myself and, you know. I mean, like F.F. ust said “time is effervescent,” or whatever the military word is, so I thought I better to get someone who knew more about those things, and then I needed to find a present and so that took some doing as well. It can be hard figuring out what sort of present would be best, you know…” F.F. looked as though his head was about to explode and took a huge breath to deliver what would’ve surely been one of the great dismissals given to a subordinate officer in the history of oni-dom. However, precisely at this moment he was interrupted by the most junior member of our party as little Hornesbane stood atop the table, trampling Charry’s carefully copied manuscript in the process and shouted, “Look! Boat!”

Sure enough, despite “failing to maintain discipline,” if that’s the phrase I want, “Super Ultra Mega Private Hornesbane” was correct in his observation. There was indeed a small watercraft coasting down the river in our general direction. “Golly, that looks an awful lot like Thelinda’s grandpa’s boat from here,” said Clubby holding up his hands and making them into binoculars over his eyes which he had assured us worked nearly as well as the real thing and seeing as he was our “Scout Master” we had let the matter drop without further argument.

“Oh, I hope it is, I told that old Kappa at least a dozen times,” said Charry finishing his tart and getting up to his feet with a brief stretch before shouting, “Ahoy there!” Up from the prow of the vessel we saw a dented crown surrounded by scraggly white hair and beneath it a pair of yellow shimmering eyes and beaked snout – a Kappa as I’m sure you’ve guessed by now.

“What’s that?” shouted the Kappa placing a webbed hand up to his ear, “Who said something?” he said looking about frantically before losing his balance and, nearly capsizing the boat in the process, tumbling off the starboard (or perhaps it was port I can never remember which one is which and cannot understand why nautical terms must be so needlessly confusing when perfectly good words like “left” and “right” already exist) side of the boat into the river.

After a terrific splash, the Kappa popped its head up and made that rumbling sputtering sound that yokai of this nature are one to do. “Just bring the boat around here,” said Charry walking down to the water’s edge and extending his hand. “Oh, what’s that? I thought you said on the bridge?” “Under the bridge,” corrected Charry as the rest of us ran up after him and clustered round. There was no mistaking it now, it was the old Thorngrove’s fishing boat. “Oh!” said the Kappa, “Yes, that’s a much better idea, under not over, yes that’s just fine.” The kindly Kappa was, upon closer inspection, quite the aged specimen.

The white hair which flowed from the circumference of his caved cranium enwrapped his shell like some stately, silken robe nearly all the way down to the soles of his flippered- feet. Swimming over to the riverbank quite gingerly for one so seemingly frail and diminutive, he passed Charry the rope and then, steering alongside, expertly docked the vessel on the bank of the river. Kappa, as you might know, can be quite the friendly and dependable yokai if treated properly and with respect. They even have been known to befriend humans and, all in all, are intelligent, good natured sort of yokai that we oni get along with rather well, though given that they mostly reside about rivers we don’t exactly pass each other on the way to the market. Still, from the perspective of mankind I suppose that, much like we oni, a few bad apples have managed to ruin the reputation of an otherwise solid and sturdy stock of amphibious yokai and, to be entirely fair to the records of mankind, there was time when – not unlike we oni – Kappa and humans fought quite fiercely, but perhaps more on this another time.

What you may not realize is that despite the fact that we so rarely have the occasion to come to anything approaching so much as exchanging unpleasant words with other yokai, we oni are often greatly feared by other creatures of our realm and the Kappa are no exception in this regard. To my knowledge, this isn’t so much as the result of any longstanding feud or other such unpleasantness but because for some reason Kappa are of the opinion that oni only come by the water to feast upon other yokai. I have no idea how this kind of superstitious nonsense gets circulated among the common creatures and even among those who ought to know better. Nonetheless, the fact remains that most of our folk are unfamiliar with Kappa purely due to the fact that they’ll bolt from the riverbank and swim for open ocean if they get so much as a whiff of an oni’s scent.

Their eyesight isn’t so keen out of water but their sense of smell is astonishing, which always struck me as most fascinating for once, in a more inadvisable episode of youthful experimentation, I was curious as to how a fish could smell so…well, so very fishy once it had been fished out of water. I began to wonder if there was some quality in the air that caused fish to smell that way and if, when submerged beneath the blue as is there preference, they smelled more or less pleasant, or perhaps even fragrant like a flower. So, diving into the local lake and coming upon a rather oblivious looking carp I decided to try to smell the creature in its natural environment. After nearly drowning myself in a decidedly misguided attempt to make what I assumed would be quite the discovery, and blowing lake water out of my nose for the better part of an hour, I determined that some mysteries of the natural world are better left unsolved.

ほら、F.F.

At any rate, the old Kappa, who seemed to be practically blind, was sniffing the air whilst bobbing about and said, “Oh…goodness…quite the lot of you, aren’t there? Four, no five! Well, well, my goodness.” Yet there was no trace of unease or fear in his voice, in fact he seemed rather grandfatherly, if a bit senile.

“Come on, chums,” called Charry as we gazed on in astonishment, “help me carry it it over to HQ so as to be out of sight. It’s for, well you know, what F.F. always says, “operational scarcity” or what have you.” “Security,” corrected F.F. and marched over to the river’s edge while Clubby and I followed closely behind. “Right, that’s what I meant,” said Charry, passing us a length of rope. And so we towed the tiny ship ashore and, to the best of our abilities, concealed it beneath the bridge.

For a while all was silent, save for the sound of the old Kappa paddling nearby, humming lowly to himself and a light breeze whistling through the trees. “Charry,” I said with a heavy pause, for the thing had to be dealt with sooner or later, “This is the Thornegrove’s boat, isn’t it?”

He nodded heartily, “Yes, I was worried too, you know. The old Kappa’s quite a nice fellow once you get to know him, but I think his memory might be even worse than mine. I had to keep reminding him all day and listening to lots of very long stories about fishes and eels and floods and all kinds of things about rivers too. I think most “olds” tend to get that way.”

“Right, but it does make things a bit odd in that, well since we decided NOT to be pirates, it’s a shame that we should now have a pirate boat, you know?” F.F. was simply pacing up and down the bank while Clubby stared in disbelief. There was no beating about the bush, or the river for that matter – if there is such an expression – we had stolen the boat.

“Charry, look this is serious the games are nearly here and-” F.F. hadn’t the chance to continue as Charry snapped his fingers and said, “That’s right, I had nearly forgotten!” and reached into his pocket producing a large bundle of cucumbers. “Mr. Kappa! Thanks again for your help, here’s your present as promised!” Well, if you had told me a Kappa who looked as though he was practically all grown up when the world was still young could move that fast I should’ve called you one of the bolder liars known to history, but in the next instant the old Kappa practically rocketed onto the river bank and said, “Oh goodness me, thanks sonny! What a nice little oni lad, much obliged, much obliged indeed.” and he set upon the cucumbers like one might expect a hyena to descend upon a fresh pile of carrion – if carrion can indeed ever be considered “fresh” that is.

It was quite the fearsome display and I thanked myself that I was born an oni and not a cucumber and certainly not a cucumber within a hundred miles of a Kappa. The whole feast was finished in the blink of an eye and the old Kappa collapsed back into the river with a most impressive splash and then, floating on his back to the surface, heaved a blissful sigh of contentedness, “Such a nice little oni lad…such a lovely present for a sorry old-timer like me…hee hee..” and more or less carried on in that manner.

“Kappa’s are quite fond of cucumbers,” said Charry beaming with a broad grin. A massive piece of understatement as there ever was.

F.F. emitted his trademark, “cough preceding a serious statement,” once more and said, “Charry this is no laughing matter. She’ll come looking for the boat and we’ll all be pummeled to pudding before sunrise.” At the mention of Thelinda Clubby had gone pale and sat down abruptly before his legs decided to sit down for him. Charry seemed, as per usual, nonplussed by the suggestion, “Why should she come looking for it? It’s her grandfather’s boat, not hers and he’s away until the morning of the games.”

“How on earth do you know that?” I asked, shocked that such a piece of enemy intelligence should’ve fallen into his hands.

“Because my mom was talking to Mrs. Ghastgriner who’s married to the gardener of the Thornegrove’s and she said her husband had been so glad to have them out of the manor so he could work in peace. See, I think your planned routes are a real good idea and all F.F.,” noted Charry in a charitable tone, “…and the changing clothes, that one’s real clever too, but I just couldn’t see why we should run along the river when it’d be much simpler to ride on the river. Plus, if we decide to become pirates again, we’ll have our boat and it’ll make reaching the sea much easier and we can tell whoever runs the pirate exams or whatever that we already stole one boat so that should get us, I dunno, extra points or something.”

I had to admit this all struck me as quite the sound bit of reasoning, and from Charry of all people, but I had spotted a crucial flaw.

“Yes but…then what’s to be done if we DON’T become pirates, then we’re just ordinary thieves and I should think that makes the whole thing a bit less…well, respectable, if you see what I mean.”

“Oh, I told the old Kappa to meet us near the falls, that’s the checkpoint, right F.F.?” said Charry shrugging a bit, “I had to tell him about 100 times and I suspect I shall have to again tomorrow just to make sure he doesn’t forget, and I’ll have to scrounge up some more cucumbers too. But, he’ll take the boat and bring it back once the games are over. So, if we decide not to become pirates then we’re just borrowing it, and there’s nothing wrong with borrowing, right?”

This all seemed very well thought out. F.F. too seemed to be coming around but then stammered, “Yes, but…I mean, surely the rules state that-” now here Charry was quick to retort, “The rules say you can’t have any other yokai help during the games, yes. But the game’s aren’t until the day after tomorrow and it’s not the day after tomorrow now because it’s today. And today can’t be the day after tomorrow, you know.”

One had to admit this was flawlessly logical.

“Yes, all right, but I mean we’re forbidden to use anything except our feet like the rules said, you copied it down and-”

here Charry broke in again and said, “Yes, the rules save you have to run when you’re on the field. They don’t say anything about the water and I should think any rule that said you had to run on water could probably be ignored because it’s impossible to run on the water. And a rule as silly as that can’t really be followed anyway because it’s impossible, right?” said Charry shrugging a bit and putting the question to our strategist. Clubby and I stood there in astonishment. What’s that saying about genius being cousin to insanity? At any rate, there it was perfectly reasonable.

F.F. hung his head and gave a low, long sigh. “Charry…I mean Seargent Major Stoneskin, it’s brilliant and I should’ve thought of it myself. Well done, officer.” he said giving a crisp salute.

“Oh, thanks old chum!” said Charry returning the salute, albeit slightly less sharply.

“We should probably apply a layer of camouflage to the vessel as well,” said F.F., stroking his chin in that thoughtful way before glancing up towards the rest of the men expecting a kind of “Hear! Hear!” or “Right’o, Sir” or something to that effect. Clubby was eager to oblige, “Yes, good thinking Chief Strategist Flamehouse!” “Major Strategist,” said Charry and F.F. nearly simultaneously. F.F., made a sort of pained twitching expression and then with a brief sigh said, “Yes, well. Let’s see to it then.” “Right,” said Clubby but remained stationary

and after a somewhat lengthy pause he said, “I…I think you’d better explain the meaning of “camel flag” to Charry though, because he might get the wrong camel or worse yet the wrong flag, right?” F.F.’s twitching started up again but, regaining his composure simply coughed slightly and said, “Yes we can’t have that now can we. What I mean to say is, let’s get some leaves and sticks and things and cover up the boat so it can’t be seen so easily.”

“Oh, right-o, yes of course, I mean umm, you heard all that didn’t you, Charry?” said Clubby with some gusto, “Yes, I heard,” said Charry, immersed as he was in luring a water strider onto a stick at the riverbank. “That does seem like a good idea all right.”

The old Kappa swam up to the river’s edge next to F.F. and asked, “You wouldn’t happen to have any cucumbers on you, would you sonny?” with a gleam of insatiable, vegetable mania in his large yellow eyes. “I am afraid not, Mr. Kappa,” he said as Clubby and Charry trotted off to obtain some sticks, and leaves, and other necessary elements for “camel flags.”

“Oh, I see well…that’s a real pity, yes a real pity indeed…what about you sonny?” he said turning his gaze towards me. “Oh, well, not at the moment Mr. Kappa, but would you care for some tea?”

He furled up his beak and made a strange hissing kind of sound, “Oh no no no, that strange stuff. Can’t abide it, not at all, not at all you see.” he said before diving down beneath the water. Popping up once abruptly he said, “Must be going now, lads. You will mention to the other little fellow that umm…something about…a boat and…then more cucumbers perhaps?” “Oh yes sir, Mr. Kappa I’ll be sure to tell him.” I replied. He splashed about a bit grinning broadly and said, “Thank you…thank you…most kind little lads, really most kind,” and then with a quick flip of his webbed feet was off like a shot. Kappas really aren’t a bad sort, you see.

F.F. looked on the setting sun as the sky began to fill with that lovely orange, reddish, purpleish hue that it dons just before heading off to bed. “Only one day left until we take the field of battle,” he said, pacing once again with his hands behind his back. “But, we’ll win. I just know we will.” I watched the sinking sunlight alight upon the water and in that moment everything seemed so peaceful and free. The end of just another ordinary day. “Yes, I think we shall,” I said before turning back to HQ and motioning to F.F., “Well, c’mon then, we’d better go and make sure the “camels and flags” are in order, what?” F.F., offered a brief chuckle and then rolled his eyes and said, “Yes, I think we’d better had,” and we jogged back amidst the sounds of the breeze, and the river, and a dispute about what kinds of leaves ought to cover a stolen boat. In less than forty-eight hours, the great game of Oni Tag would begin.

“What a splendid land this is, and how lovely are its people! Fear not, I promise not to eat anyone!”
