On Mate Selection and Matrimony (and how to avoid both) Part 8

しかしF.F.

Greetings dear readers and may this message find you well. Today continues the Thelinda Thornegrove affair wherein the gauntlet is thrown and a formal challenge – or something very much like that – is issued to the enemy.
|
So, the day of the battle drew near and we redoubled our efforts knowing soon we must face our mortal foe. One morning after a particularly rigorous training session which included spending the better part of an hour practicing vaults onto the tire swing, which F.F. had said could possibly help us with “evasive maneuvers,” we were marching along to the bakery for a much deserved butter sausage roll to restore our vigor. Although, I must admit, there was some initial confusion on what “maneuvers” were as opposed to “actions” or “exercises” but F.F. assured us that this was the “proper military term to use,” so we let the matter drop without further discussion. After all it’s bad enough having to partake in calisthenics first crack out of the bag, but adding to this a rigorous debate on vocabulary would be beyond the pale. At any rate, we were quite famished from all that “maneuvering” and finding ourselves just in the nick of time before the breakfast rush we had offered our compliments to the baker, secured the morning meal, and sat down on the steps outside to a hearty breakfast. It was at this moment, just when our esprit de corps was at its brightest, that we had a chance encounter with the enemy albeit in neutral territory. A dark cloud, by no earthly coincidence I can assure you, emerged presumably from the depths of hades and clawed its way across the deep blue sky to confound the rays of the noble emperor sun and announce the arrival of that she-devil spawn of Hecate, that unholy behemoth of the so-called fairer sex, Thelinda Thornegrove.

“Good Morning, Darling!” came the banshee’s screech putting the sparrows in the nearby treetops to flight and nearly giving a heart attack to each and every member of our merry band, to say nothing of the baker who, out of the corner of my eye, I could just make out exhibiting the kind of wincing, pained expression that one might expect from having a tooth extracted without the aid of anesthetic. It seems to me that one of the more dastardly aspects of girls is the sincerely held belief that nothing should be sacred in pursuit of their desires, not even within the bounds of “spirited competition.” I mean, just imagine the sort of fellow who finds it acceptable to stage an assault at an opponent’s breakfast table and think of how pleasant you might feel knowing that he had been arrested for this villainy and sentenced to an express trip to the burning heart of the sun. However, swap this same foul character with a “dainty young maiden” and suddenly justice finds her shining sword to be a bit dull at the moment and scurries off for some very important appointment she just now remembered and can’t possibly miss. I suppose this is what is meant by “all is fair in love and war,” which is very underhanded and suspicious way of saying, “go forth and bring great shame to your name and great calamity to your household, ye maddened by cupid’s arrow,” but we’ll leave speculation as to the merits of old sayings for another time. Having nearly choked on the last bit of sausage roll from the shock of the gorgon’s mighty howl, it was several moments before I could secure enough oxygen to mount a proper counteroffensive, but I refused to let the men down.

“Oh…yes, good morning Thelinda. Fancy seeing you here, and umm, I suppose you don’t have practice or lessons or something else to do, what?” Admittedly, this didn’t have the sort of unswerving, fearlessness in the face of danger quality that I had hoped for, but was certainly better than my initial plan which was to simply look for a place to hide, preferably deep underground among the voles and earthworms and other quiet, peaceful creatures. Following her trademark earsplitting cackle she replied, “Oh, there you go again worrying about my obligations. I must say it’s very endearing. I just finished my ballet lesson and was going to be off to school but then I spied you out of the corner of my eye here on the stoop like a little pigeon munching on your bread,” she said drawing unpleasantly closer. “Now, enough about me. What brings you here with your silly little friends so early in the morning? I never took you to be the early riser, my dear, but then I suppose that will have to change once we’re grown up and married so, better to get a start on it now. Papa always says never put off to tomorrow what can be done right this very instant.”

Here I thought could be a chance to put the challenge in a formal expression, and make our terms clear to the enemy. There are times, of course, wherein strategic secretiveness and, guile, and all that cloak and dagger stuff that F.F. was so very keen on have their due place, but…well, dash it all, once one is confronted directly with the enemy, only bold and deliberate action will suffice. With this in mind, I squared off against our foe and said, “Oh…umm…well, as you know…yes we’ve been sort of, as it, were, preparing for the games, you see.” Again, for some reason my tongue refused to utter the words my brain had very carefully dictated and, to make matters worse, my voice refused to modulate its volume and tone to reflect the sterner stuff of my soul. Instead, it sounded rather like I was a mouse caught before a lion and was desperately trying to change the subject from the matter of “food.”

“Ah!” erupted Thelinda with a kind of bizarre high pitched piercing noise that sent a dog across the street into convulsions. “You mean to say you’re training in the mornings now, too…all to make things more interesting for me? How very sweet. It will make for a wonderful story to tell our children.” she said leaning forward in a manner that triggered what I believe human naturalists refer to as a creature’s “fight or flight” response and this seems to me quite the reasonable way of putting the thing, because at that very moment I leapt backward about fifteen feet or so and probably would’ve gone on leaping had not the infernal stone wall of the bakery been so blasted solid. This was not exactly what F.F. would have termed a “tactical retreat” I thought to myself as I was now firmly up against it (the wall I mean) and facing the foul demoness as she drew in for the kill.

Seeing as the counteroffensive had proven a bust, and as escape was improbably, I resigned myself to face my fate with as much dignity as possible so I shut my eyes, held my breath, and pretended that I was already dead. Yet, just before the fatal blow was struck, the men rallied and F.F. cried out, “He’s not going to marry you, because you’re not going to catch him.” For a moment you could here a pin drop, but sadly just for a moment. Thelinda spun round and stomped over to F.F. who stood as resolute as possible, much like a squirrel might face off against a rhinoceros, and shouted, “I don’t recall asking your opinion on our private arrangements, so why don’t you stick your ugly little square head in one of those stupid books you’re always reading when you’re pretending to pay attention in school. The only reason Mrs. Fangbottom doesn’t say anything is because she feels sorry for you, always coming dead last in every event. Ha! Why, I’m surprised you can even lift those books you miserable little weakling!”

F.F. wilted, but did not falter despite such a vicious, if not somewhat accurate, taunting from the beast. All of a sudden Clubby, whose knees hadn’t stopped knocking since our foe appeared, stammered out with all the courage he could muster, “Stop! you…you…girl!” which seemed to put the matter very squarely indeed. Perhaps not the most articulate bit of riposte in the long history of the war of the sexes, but it came straight from the heart and Thelinda certainly took umbrage at that because in the next split second had somehow teleported over to Clubby and proceeded to give him her rebuttal. “WHAT WAS THAT, HARDRONE, YOU LITTLE CRYBABY? WAS THAT YOUR IDEA OF TELLING SOMEONE OFF? HA! YOU COULDN’T HARM A FLEA, YOU COULDN’T SCARE A MOUSE, AND YOU CERTAINLY AREN’T INVITED TO OUR WEDDING, SO THERE!” The sheer reverberation of her voice seemed to take all the wind out of Clubby’s sails along with the muscles from his legs and he very likely would’ve collapsed onto the street right then and there had not Charry caught the poor fellow by the shoulder. Now, I couldn’t very well stand there watching our casualties mount without so much as returning fire, so again I dove into the fray.

“But…I mean, it’s true Th…Thelinda. You’ve got to catch me or perhaps someone else, perhaps someone else entirely, who is not me, on the day of the contest, that is. And if you don’t well, that’s that, isn’t it? I mean according to the rules, you see, until next season of course, where you’d, ummm, have another chance, according to the regulations and what not, right? So, it’s not such a thing to be so upset about I…I should think.” Again, my tongue had seen fit to betray what I had imagined would be something more along the lines of the issuance of a formal challenge. I had meant it to sound very bold and daring and all that sort of thing and had even meant to throw down my handkerchief and say, “All for One and One for All!” with my fist raised in defiance. Yet, somehow none of this occurred and instead I sort of coughed and smiled awkwardly. I had meant to throw down the gauntlet and as far as I could tell it had much more the impression of accidentally dropping the gauntlet and hoping the enemy wouldn’t take notice of it. Despite this, it appeared to have some effect as Thelinda paused just as she was about to, presumably, inform Clubby of some of his other shortcomings and notify him of other future events his had been cordially disinvited to attend.

“Oh, darling you’re so funny, really sometimes I forget that we haven’t been together so very long, and there are so many things you don’t know about me.” There was something icily horrifying in the way that she seemed almost pleasant as she spoke – well not pleasant exactly but, at least absent her standard air of incessant hostility that generally characterized her speech. I had the sense I was in immediate danger once again. She began twirling about and tip-toed closer, evidently practicing her ballet until her face was once again within striking distance. If there had only been a tire swing nearby this would’ve been a perfect time to execute one of those “evasive maneuvers” we had been practicing all morning, but no such luck. The situation was become dire.

F.F. looked on in stunned horror, unsure of what to do, and Clubby, mouth agape, looked as though the strength in his legs might give out again at any moment. “But you see, darling, I always get what I want,” she said revealing a cheshire-cat grin which I suppose she had intended to be endearing rather than gruesome. “Oh, yes, well I supposed that I hadn’t…considered that aspect,” I said hoping at this point to at least raise a flag of truce as it was preferable to being eaten alive. “Yes, darling…ALWAYS,” she intoned again with the same frigid ferocity and looked ready to go straight for the jugular.

“Is that your grandpa’s boat near the mouth of the river by the old mill?” asked Clubby with his usual nonchalance in the exact sort of manner one might address an old acquaintance of many years as opposed to a merciless shrew to whom he had, as far as I recall, never said a single word to in his entire life. So unanticipated was this query given the intense nature of the situation at present, it seemed to break the spell for a moment. It was if we were rehearsing a scene for a film and all of a sudden the director realized the shot was all wrong or the lighting was off or whatever it is that causes directors to throw up their hands and yell “cut!” (as I’m told directors do from time to time) in the middle of a moment of great passion or suspense.

Thelinda, I dare say, was caught off guard and taken aback. “I thought it must be, since your family’s place is nearby the mill but I wasn’t sure.” he said with the same old lackadaisical tone, taking a last bite of his sausage roll. He then wiped his mouth on his sleeve, as was Charry’s custom, and looked Thelinda dead in the face as if to say, “Well, come now I haven’t got all day.”

“Well, I…yes of course it’s my grand-papa’s boat but, what do you mean by interrupting our conversation, aren’t you the dumb one who’s always playing with bugs and other horrible things, YOU MUST BE OR YOU WOULDN’T BE SO SILLY AS TO BOTHER-” but Charry, to the astonishment of all, was not to be deterred by the tyrant Thorngrove. Not even permitting her to arrive at what would have undoubtedly been a really crushing insult, he simply raised a hand and said, “Oh, good, thanks. I just wanted to make sure of it, that’s all.” With that, he gathered up his rucksack, said, “See you at school, chums,” and trotted off. We all stood there astonished, most of all Thelinda who had not only been ignored but was left looking, perhaps for the first time in all her born days, rather foolish.

A moment later the disorienting effect of Charry’s nonplussed inquiry had worn off and Thelinda was hopping mad. She shouted out, “DON’T YOU THINK YOU CAN JUST RUN OFF LIKE THAT, YOU IDIOT!” and bolted after Charry just as he rounded the corner of the old town hall. She was very nearly nipping on his heels in a flash and we all started after her to save our doomed companion. “Come on, men, forward!” I shouted, my brain at along last taming my doltish tongue. While the months of training had certainly paid off, we were still well behind when we rounded the corner and came upon Thelinda standing in bewilderment, her eyes darting to and fro. Charry was nowhere to be seen. “COME BACK HERE THIS INSTANT!” she shouted with such a shrill shriek that, to this very day, I remain convinced that I saw one of the second floor windows in the old town hall crack.

Her eyes flashed with hellfire and she turned to face me. “He’s gone!” she said fuming, with the same kind of, “well, come now I haven’t got all day,” sort of expression that Charry had given her just a few moments ago – only decidedly more terrifying. I knew this was a time to exercise diplomacy but remain firm in our cause. “Well, it certainly seems he is,” I said with a bit of a chuckle. Somehow this had the opposite effect. I suspect that diplomacy and wartime negotiations are one of those things that require practice.

Thelinda’s eyes nearly popped out of her head. She clenched her fists and began sort of simmering from every pore, her entire body reverberating with pure distilled rage, seeming like she might combust at any moment.

“Thelinda, aren’t you going to walk with us to school?” said a tiny rabbit-like voice from another girl standing amongst a gaggle of other dancers who had gathered with their bags and point shoes and whatever else girls need for ballet-ing. Evidently, the cowards had elected this poor unfortunate lass to be “speaker for the house,” as it were. In the next instant Thelinda turned around and, after flashing perhaps the single most disingenuous smile in recorded history, said, “Oh, yes of course!” with a nauseating giggle. “Silly me, I didn’t realize the time. Bye-bye darling, see you later!” she said in a revolting sing-song sort of way and pranced off with the rest of the enemy platoon. It was a very close thing, mind you, and the contest was only three days away.

“She’s gone,” said Clubby with a heavy sigh of relief. “Thank all the good gods, she’s gone,” he said again clasping his hands in gratitude as if spared the executioner’s axe. “Sorry old chums,” said Clubby turning in our direction. “I tried my best but…I let you down I suppose,” and his voice began to trail off.

“No worries, pal. It’s not like you have to talk to her come the day of the games, just run like the wind, that’s all.” I said.

“Oh, that won’t be a problem, sir, I can tell you.” said Clubby managing a feeble salute.

私はF.F.

“Well one’s thing for sure,” said F.F. as the dust had settled from our first skirmish, “we’ve got to win no matter what. Imagine being married to that for your whole rotten life. Exile would be a paradise by comparison. And it’s no good to us either, because she’d be around all the time and spoil everything for certain and we’d never be able to go on any adventures or do anything fun ever again.” He paused for a moment, scratching his chin before emitting his customary three short coughs and then, placing his hands behind his back, said, “There’s no way around it, gentlemen, it’s victory or death.”

“Spoken like a man,” I said to F.F., the whole blighted thing descending upon me all at once. These were desperate times indeed and in the heat of battle I hadn’t even bothered to think of what became of Charry. I was just about to suggest we form a search party when in the distance we heard the school bell ring.

“What a splendid land this is, and how lovely are its people! Fear not, I promise not to eat anyone!”
