On Mate Selection and Matrimony (and how to avoid both) Part 10
The dawn of the final day before the great contest broke with a smattering of rain. You know, just the amount of rain that has you debating whether or not you really need an umbrella or whether you perhaps should just walk a slightly brisker pace from point A to point B. What I mean to say was, it was the indecisive sort of rain, if you understand my meaning, and by dawn I suppose I should clarify that it was really something more like mid-morning. For after all that “camel flagging” as Clubby called it despite F.F.’s repeated attempts to coach him into the correct pronunciation and a particularly vigorous debate concerning what sort of leaves are best to conceal the bow (if that’s the correct nautical term I want) I was feeling rather tuckered out, and the vacillating weather seemed to indicate that this was one of those days better spent in bed. However, just as the thought of returning to the arms of Morpheus and the comfort of blankets and pillows began to appear all the more alluring, I chanced to notice another peculiar atmospheric condition, namely the sight of an expertly crafted paper airplane soaring through my bedroom window and landing rather gracefully on the top of my bureau.
Now, it had occurred to me that seeing as the aircraft had landed safely, there was no need to bother about the matter any further. Undoubtedly the flight crew would be able to easily guide the passengers safely from the bureau to whatever their final destination may be, however this was slightly complicated by the fact that there was a piercing whistling sound that came at regular intervals from outside the window. Realizing that further delay might result in escalation of various means of slumber harassment, auditory or otherwise, I groggily staggered to the window to find F.F. skulking about the geraniums. “Ho!” I said with a pronounced yawn. “Ho!” said F.F. in a sort of loudish-whisper before checking his surroundings one final time and asking through cupped hands, “Did you receive the communiqué?”
さすがF.F.
“You mean the airplane? It landed on the bureau all right if that’s what you mean.” I said, still not particularly coherent. F.F. shook his head in frustration and resumed his inquiry in a somewhat louder tone, “No, no, no, the message inside!” Not quite getting the picture I stretched again and called down, “Look, F.F., wouldn’t this be a bit easier if you were to come inside and tell me what’s up?” He raised his forefinger to his lips and shushed with great vigor. “Not so loud! The enemy has eyes everywhere. Anyways, check the message and proceed with all due haste, Master Sergeant.” I turned to retrieve the airplane which, as expected of F.F. was a real crackerjack of a job, so much so that I hated to ruin its fine construction, but the demands of wartime operations being what they are, I unfolded the paper and read the contents as follows: “FLASH: PRIORITY: SUPER URGENT. ENEMY ACTION THREATENS ESCAPE PLAN. MEET AT HQ AT 1100 HOURS. EXERCISE EXTREME CAUTION. DESTROY THIS MESSAGE AFTER READING.”
Not exactly the sort of lighthearted, cheerful greeting one wishes to receive while the morning fog still lingers in the mind, especially on a day so ideally suited to sleeping in. Yet, there it was, something was most definitely up, however F.F.’s message was quite vague regarding the nature of this so-called “enemy action,” and this was, I should think, precisely the sort of thing that one might wish to include in such a crucial communique. Then again, F.F. was generally very thorough about “the proper military terms,” so perhaps it was a longstanding tradition of all serious and well regulated armed forces to leave out significant details like, “Take caution of what?” or “What does the enemy’s action consist of?” Then again, I suspected that F.F. had to make at least two more of these airplanes and run to both Charry’s and Clubby’s house to perform the same espionage routine and as that too would take considerable time, perhaps he thought it best to be brief. Nonetheless, it made things most vexing for me and rather than be held in suspense I would’ve much preferred to simply be told in plain terms, especially first thing in the morning.
Returning to the window I looked down to where I was quite certain F.F. had been a moment ago and began, “Look, F.F., what do you mean “enemy action” can’t we just talk this over a cup of tea…” but, finding only the geraniums and several large footprints for which I would most certainly be blamed later on, it appeared as though any further inquiries would have to wait until “1100 hours.” I could just make out F.F. creeping along the neighbor’s house before performing what seemed to be a rather superfluous double-somersault through the hole in the gate and then dashing down the street in a serpentine fashion which he had assured me on several occasions was the best way to avoid enemy fire, though I couldn’t see any snipers in the immediate area.
I sighed heavily and began to wonder again why our noble ancestors thought it fit to arrange such a complex variety of matrimonial customs instead of just meeting at a nice cafe or something similar as I am told is often the case with most human affairs. However, as I seemed to be the only oni in the village with any sense in this matter of matchmaking and securing one’s progeny, there was only one thing to do: Destroy the message (which seemed a shame for such a finely crafted paper airplane) make myself of a cup of tea, use the last bit of spare change to purchase a sausage roll from the bakery, and finally head over to HQ to learn what fresh new developments of agony the fates had designed for yours truly. All for One and One for All and all that rot, you know.
As the old covered bridge came into sight and the mercurial rainclouds decided that it would be best to go elsewhere for the day the sun shone through in all its glory. Feeling greatly refreshed by two cups of golden leaf brew followed by a most restorative sausage roll, for which I had to scrounge the cushions of our bestial, gluttonous sofa for the better part of fifteen minutes to find the final remaining funds, I couldn’t help but think that under different circumstances, I would’ve been very glad to be out and about, enjoying the pleasant weather and a stroll through the unspoiled splendor of nature, and all that. But the morning’s aerial bombardment had rather put a damper on the whole thing and a sense of impending doom was the prevailing feeling as F.F. spied me heading towards the old fort. “You weren’t followed?” he said, still just as on-edge as earlier this morning. “No, I don’t think so,” I said looking behind me just to make doubly certain.
I suppose I had exercised some level of “caution” en route, as the message instructed, but whether or not it would constitute the “extreme” level that F.F. strongly recommended was anybody’s guess. Still, after scanning the horizon he seemed satisfied. “Good, well then come along, the situation is most urgent!” he said resuming his heel-toe stalking. I followed in the normal sort of walking manner that, no doubt, many of you are accustomed to and use as your default mode of conveyance. Not only are these sorts of military maneuvers are not my strong suit, but I had the very keen impression that skulking about people’s yards and dodging hither and thither in a serpentine fashion on a bright sunny morning complete with odd somersault here or there might actually do more to attract attention than simply walking. However, I decided it best to say nothing and leave these details to our Major Strategist.
Upon entering, I was most surprised to see that Clubby and Charry were already present. “Ho!” I said cheerfully, and they replied in turn, “Ho!” “I didn’t think I’d be the last to arrive,” I said taking a seat and wishing that I had perhaps brought a little something from the homestead to sustain myself as one sausage roll, while certainly enough to stave off starvation, was not what one would call a proper breakfast. “I was already up,” said Clubby, “F.F. gave me the most frightful start.” F.F. betraying a slight grin, resumed his “hands behind the back pacing thoughtfully” routine and said, “You must always keep your wits about you, First Lieutenant and Scout Master Hardhorne. Remember this: you’ll have no second chances with the enemy.” he said with a paternalistic glare. “Right-o, sir,” said Clubby with a salute.
“Get any practice on the tire swing then?” I asked. “Oh yes lots, F.F. joined in and we were at it for at least a half-hour or so, maneuvering and all that, then we got a bit hungry and Mom made us brambleberry hotcakes with cream. You should’ve been there!” said Charry. This tale of Mrs. Hardhone’s hotcakes, practically the stuff of legends in our village for their delectableness, wounded the stomach and the soul. “I suppose Major Strategist Flamehouse joined in as well?” I said eyeing F.F. with more than a bit of agitation. “Oh yes, of course, he had seconds.” said Clubby. “Did he? Strange that I couldn’t have been brought in for this impromptu meeting instead of being pelted with paper airplanes, isn’t it Major?” I said, and I meant it to sting a bit.
F.F. coughed and made one of his “Hmmm” sounds and then said, “Well, I had to get you up first because your house is closest to mine and well…it was an unforeseen development.” Only someone as particularly devoted to the cause, such as F.F., could seriously make being invited to eat a glorious breakfast of scrumptious hotcakes sound like a grave, and serious duty. “Yes, well ‘War is Hell’ or so goes the saying, I suppose,” I said rolling my eyes, but I fear the sarcasm was lost on F.F. as he wasn’t looking at me and had already begun rummaging through his rucksack. “What about you Charry?” I asked glancing over to see that Charry was busy with guiding a ladybug to the tip of his foreclaw. “Oh, F.F. just came inside and told me we had a special meeting and then left, and seeing as I hadn’t much to do this morning I decided to just head over straight away.” Upon hearing this my agitation increased. This phenomenon is what I believe is known as adding insult to injury.
するとF.F.
“Just came inside, really? No stealthy infiltration no aerial assaults, huh?” Here F.F. interjected again, “Your room is on the second floor, it couldn’t be helped.” “Well…” continued Charry, “He came in through the window after doing a lot of strange sort of skulking and sneaking and maneuvering out in the yard and Mom yelled, ‘What’s your little friend doing in our yard?’ and I said ‘I don’t know which friend’ and she said ‘The odd one’ and I said ‘Oh, right’ and then went over and asked what he was doing and F.F. shushed me and said something about “urgent devil mints.” said Charry, watching the ladybug take flight.
“Developments,” corrected F.F. now seated at our makeshift chart table and, removing a tightly rolled piece of butcher paper from his rucksack, spread it out revealing the problem in question. “And what did your mother mean by “the odd one,” anyway?” he asked with some indignation.
“It’s OK, F.F., I knew she meant you,” said Charry patting him on the back without the slightest trace of malice in his voice.
“Anyways, gather round gentlemen,” said F.F., letting the matter drop, “We haven’t a moment to lose. This morning at around 0700 hours,” began F.F. revealing a detailed diagram of the situation, “I was on patrol and deep in contemplation going over our stratagem for, as you are only too well aware, the dawn of battle is nigh. As luck would have it, I happened to spy the enemy and several subordinate officers returning from what I gathered to be some form of counter-espionage training within the neutral territory of the town fountain adjacent to the post office.”
Good old F.F., always one for panache, yet not one for simplicity.
“Seeing as time short, Major Strategist, might you condense the description?” I asked wishing to avoid the inevitable confusion regarding “military decorum.”
F.F., again irritated at the lack of spirited appreciation from the rich martial lexicon, sighed briefly and said, “I saw Thelinda and some other dumb girls in town, after they had finished their calligraphy practice.”
“Golly!” gasped Clubby, having firmly grasped the situation.
“So, what happened then?” asked Charry.
F.F. cleared his throat and, gesturing to his carefully detailed, “Reconnaissance Report,” continued with the briefing (if that’s the word I want), “Yes, I was just coming to that…the enemy, no doubt realizing that victory was not certain after receiving intelligence of our training methods, has resorted to securing mercenary forces, or condottiere to be precise.”
“What is the opposite of precise?” asked Charry.
“Why, “imprecise” of course,” said F.F. in a matter of fact tone.
“Well, can you put it that way then?” inquired Charry again.
“Seconded,” I said flatly.
“Thirded,” said Clubby.
F.F., once again disappointed at the troops inability to get into the spirit of things, folded his arms with a heavy sigh, “I do wish you’d show a bit more esprit de corps, gentlemen.”
“F.F., if we knew what that meant I think we would, you know, right chums?” said Charry and Clubby and I nodded in hearty agreement. “Oh never mind!” said F.F. throwing up his hands in exasperation, “Thelinda promised a whole gold coin to anyone who’d help catch you and she also added that anyone who tried to take your ribbons instead of her would get thrashed into pudding for starters and then fed to Flufferous Excelsius.”
It was most fortunate that I was already seated, for receiving news of such an unpleasant and unexpected nature would’ve been far too much for my feeble legs to carry. Nonetheless, to the extent that it was possible to “stagger” or “stumble” while seated I did something very near to that. “Double Golly!” said Clubby, shocked to the point of having to invoke the rare “double” prefix to his exclamation. “That’s sort of a long name for a koma inu, don’t you think?” asked Charry, evidently unmoved by this abominable turn of events. “I mean, it takes quite a while to say, and I can’t imagine the dog likes it. And you know what else, I don’t think a dog could eat an oni unless it were really hungry, you know?” he mused. “Well, yes, under normal circumstances, but a dog could be trained to eat an oni, and then grow accustomed to oni flesh over time,” replied F.F. in a thoughtful manner.
Seeing as this was entirely beside the point, I inquired in earnest, “Are you sure, she really said a whole gold coin?” astonished that such a sum would be offered. You must understand that, half a silver coin for the New Year’s Holiday was, in most households of our humble village, the standard. Certainly, those families who had a bit more to spare might offer a whole silver coin. Then there were those, perhaps with a rich eccentric uncle, who’d get two or even three silver coins a year: one for a birthday, one for the New Year’s and one for the Summer Star Festival. But a whole gold coin? Why, this was such an audacious amount, such a profligate extravagance that even the most chaste and wholesome females, those unswayed by the gnawing vice of filthy lucre, would be tempted to heed the siren song of avarice. In fact, at the prospect of such an absurdly generous offering, I suspect my own mother would try to join to assist the wretched fiend. So unnerved was I at this villainous debasement that I stood up and, from the depths of my heart, cursed every female oni in the realm for all time and added a few other notes that I am too ashamed to repeat here.
The men were most sympathetic to my anguish and, I dare say, quite impressed that I knew so many fine swear words.
Once the dust had settled, and I had come back to my senses, I turned to F.F. in desperation and said, “Look, this must be a violation of the rules!” F.F. nodded, “Oh, it most certainly is, but what can we do? It’d just be our word against theirs and so we’d have to take it to the judges, the day before the Games, and you know how foolish grownups are, the girls would start crying and then we’d probably get in trouble at the end of it.” “Yes, we probably would,” said Clubby kicking the dirt in a moment of shared exasperation. “Girls count on that sort of thing, it’s why they act the way they do,” concurred Charry blithely. F.F. taking the grim situation in hand sighed heavily and then said, “I regret to inform you gentlemen that, after mulling it over for quite some time, I have yet to come up with a satisfactory solution. The enemy has proved most cunning, far beyond my expectations.” This was really too much. After all our efforts, all our planning, and all the sweat and blood we had poured into this great contest, and now this most wretched and wicked of all females was simply going to buy her victory with money handed to her on a silver platter by her loathsome parents? No. It was beyond the pale, and I would not stand for it.
“What about the spirit of competition and fairness and…pride and…” then as I was searching for a word that meant, “And not being a slimy, contemptible shrew” it hit me like a bolt of lightning. I stood there for a moment mouth agape, rolling the idea around in the old cranium. Yes, it would work. It just had to work. Without saying another word, I gave a smart salute to the troops and started off towards town.
“I say, Master Seargent, where are you going? The meeting hasn’t been adjourned!” said F.F. in protest, but my mind was made up and my dander was up too. I was going to be rid of this blighted female once and for all and I was going to start by putting an end to this chicanery. Turning back as I reached the bridge I shouted, “Follow me, men!” and continued on my way, striding purposefully towards the main road back to town. Charry shrugged and began to follow with Clubby in tow. “Well, all right…meeting adjourned,” called out F.F. and began to pack up his gear before jogging along to catch up, but my stride never wavered. It was now or never.
“What a splendid land this is, and how lovely are its people! Fear not, I promise not to eat anyone!”
