On Mate Selection and Matrimony (and how to avoid both) Part 11
As we reached main street to find things all a bustle with the “pre-lunch” rush, I took a sharp turn at the corner of Skinkston Street and Lionsfoot Lane and proceeded forthwith to the doors of the Devilsong Dance Academy. “Where are we headed, surely you can’t mean…” said F.F. growing pallid as we drew nearer. “Hey, what’s the plan here, chums?” asked Clubby before adding with a marked note of trepidation, “This all seems…well, downright dangerous,” stopping in his tracks before the enemy stronghold. “He’s right you know, we can’t risk a frontal assault it’s suicide,” chimed in F.F., his eyes darting about. “It’s all right, gentlemen. Leave it to me,” I said mustering every bit of courage I had as my blood had cooled since the revelation of this appalling treachery and now, poised as I was at the threshold of hell, I began to have a few reservations about my brilliant idea and wondered if Lord Jupiter’s thunderbolt had, perhaps, gone astray.
Now, I had no intention of throwing my life away nor to play the sainted martyr for our cause, but I couldn’t see any other around this thorny predicament. Here I took my stand, and at this very moment, as if commanded by some great unseen force, the doors to the academy were flung wide sending the brass door chimes clanging away furiously. A gaggle of prancing oni females gushed forth like a dam had burst and at the head of this dreadful flood stood our mortal foe herself, Thelinda Thorngrove. For a while she seemed not to notice me as I stood stone still before the steps waiting for my opportunity. And then, just as she was launching into her grating “unfortunate cat whose tail was crushed by a falling anvil” laugh which set the teeth on edge of every toothed creature in the square, her terrible gaze fell upon me. It was all I could do to not resort to my usual practice of fleeing for all I was worth, but I held firm.
“Darling! Did you come to visit me? Oh, and you brought your silly friends along too. Well no matter, I’m sure they have oodles of things to do and wouldn’t mind if we steal away for the afternoon. Ah, just the two of us, how romantic. Now what shall we do?” she said, flitting down the steps and pirouetting to our position. “I know, why don’t we have tea and cakes at the Kotobuki Kafe!”
“Don’t fall for it, man! It’s a trap, they’re bound to be laced with poison!” whispered F.F. as she drew closer. Clubby knees began to knock together and Charry seemed, more or less, confused by the whole thing.
“No thank you, Thelinda. I have come here on an important matter.” I said tapping my chest lightly with a closed fist, as it was the only gesture I could think of to convey a sense of injured honor, but apparently it was not interpreted as such. “Oh, Darling!” shrieked the serpentess, “you don’t mean YOU had something else planned?”
“Well, that is to say…yes, and…” I was beginning to lose my train of thought, but this was no time for timidity. I had to forge within myself a will of iron, and as the fire in my belly began to grow hot I took a deep breathe and said,
“Look here, I think it’s downright awful that you promised a whole gold coin to whomever would help you at the great tag tournament and…well, and it’s just downright awful that’s what, you know?” I paused just for an instant and pointed at the demoness in as condemnatory manner as possible. It felt right. Ah yes, this was the gesture I should’ve begun with in the first place. This should have been the launch of my opening salvo. But, there was no time to rest on my laurels, I had to press the attack further, so with a foreclaw of fearsome judgment extended I continued, “And furthermore, I should think that the pride of the Thornegrove clan would be above something as base and undignified as resorting to bribery. So…so there you have it!” I said folding my arms in indignation.
For a brief moment all was silent. Thelinda, I daresay, looked flabbergasted for a moment, then as if by some preternatural instinct the coven of ballet-slipper clad harpies clustered behind her like a brood of chicks seeking refuge from a storm. Our merry band stood tall in the face of the enemy, even Clubby’s knees stopped knocking. Then, like the ravenous howling of a thousand ghouls, Thelinda erupted into a cackle that surely must’ve shattered several glasses in the pub three blocks away and after a nauseating gasp said, “Oh-ha-ha! Darling how bold you’re being today! Why I must say, I quite like it. But where did you get such a silly idea?” But I would have none of this.
今朝、F.F.
“There’s no use denying it, Thelinda. F.F. saw the whole thing this very morning,” I said, still keeping my arms folded in cold defiance. “That’s right!” shouted F.F. whose blood was up as well. “It’s a blatant violation of the grounding principles of the competition and…” F.F. would’ve continued going on like that in fine form, but at this moment the gorgon’s tongue set loose again and with all the fires of hell behind it, “YES, WE ALL SAW YOU CREEPING AROUND AND DOING YOUR STUPID LITTLE TIPTOE WALKING OR WHATEVER IT’S CALLED, FANGBREAKER. DID YOU THINK YOU WERE BEING SNEAKY? IT WAS BROAD DAYLIGHT, YOU IMBECILE! DO YOU THINK DOING SOMERSAULTS AROUND CORNERS MAKES IT SO PEOPLE CAN’T SEE YOU? THIS IS WHY NO ONE EVER TALKS TO YOU, WEIRDO!”
This, despite being a fair criticism of F.F.’s attempted subterfuge, was a bridge too far. I would not stand for such umbrage against a fellow officer. “I’ll have you know, he’s a perfectly good strategist, and that doesn’t change the fact that you said what you said, Thelinda.” I said, refusing to let her weasel out of it, as is the custom among the so-called fairer sex. “Now let’s have it out once and for all. Are you going to play fair or not?” and here I let the matter rest. Her eyes narrowed again and she gave a sinister smile that would shake the scales off a crocodile. “Oh, all right darling. I suppose you’re right. It’s just that I couldn’t bear the thought of someone else claiming my prize that’s all,” and she inched closer, nearly within striking distance.
“So, I hereby withdraw my most generous offer and pledge to play things fair and square,” she said with a sickening curtsey. “Got that girls?” she said flashing a monstrous grin to the rest of the gaggle. They all nodded meekly as if struck mute. “However,” she continued, “I DO NOT,” and she pounced on the words “do not” with a horrid growling sort of sound, “withdraw my threats to anyone who gets in my way or tries to take a single ribbon from my darling – and that goes double for that rotten, prissy little Cyntropia Sawsong,” she said icily, her eyes widening with bloodlust. “You got that too, girls?” she added with perhaps the second most disingenuous smile in all the long recorded history of oni-kind. Again, the helpless minions nodded and cowered in humble submission.
For reasons I cannot understand to this very day the next words that escaped my mouth struck me then and now as utterly mad.
“Swear then, and shake on it!” I heard myself saying, and what’s more saying it a demanding, schoolmaster sort of manner. Before I realized what fool thing my brain had swindled my idiot body into doing I was extending my hand to the foul beast.
Again a peel of bone-chilling cackling escaped from the wretch and she bolted right in front of me. “Of course, darling, if you insist!” And taking my hand with a grip that would prove beyond all doubt that she was none other than the spawn of that seven-time champion wrestler we shook on it. She took advantage her ferocious grip and drew ever closer with her menacing Cheshire-cat grin, “Tomorrow our courtship becomes official, darling. Oh, I can hardly wait,” and still she drew closer the spiteful banshee, and just as she was about to plunge the dagger…
“Is your dog really named Flufferous Excelsius?” came, in the very nick of time, the voice of that prince among Oni, that most loyal and trusted friend, that peerless soldier of fortune and compatriot, Charry. “It just seems like too many syllables, and I can’t imagine a koma inu – even a very smart one – being able to respond to a name like that,” he said, once again breaking the spell. I relinquished my hand from the fiend’s grasp and narrowly avoided sure death once again.
“Well, no of course, that’s just his registered name, we call him Fluffy at home but…” said Thelinda again in an almost, well “pleasant” certainly isn’t the right word when speaking of the voice of Thelinda Thorngrove no matter the circumstances, so I should have to say in a “less blaring than usual” tone.
“Oh, thanks. I thought it must be something like that. Well, see you all tomorrow, chums.” said Charry in his usual, nonchalant fashion and then as if possessed under the spell of some meddlesome imp added, “Bye, Thelinda,” as if it was the most natural thing in the world, as if they had been old friends.
Once more all parties were beset with the most unpleasant sensation that sense that surely someone was pulling a very elaborate practical joke, and then Thelinda returned to her old form and bellowed, “WHY ARE YOU ALWAYS INTERRUPTING WITH STUPID QUESTIONS ABOUT ME? AND DON’T SAY “BYE, THELINDA,” IN THAT FAMILIAR WAY…AND JUST WHERE DO YOU THINK YOU’RE GOING, DON’T IGNORE ME YOU-”
And then Charry turned back and said, “I’m sorry but I’ve got to help my grandma at the shop this afternoon, I can’t stay and talk, you know? So, bye Thelin- I mean, um…take care!” said Charry and trotted off.
“Oh…well, if you have to help your grandmother, I suppose…” said Thelinda again in the least thunderous manner any of us had ever heard her speak. It was as though Charry was the only oni in the whole village with enough…well, now “intelligence” certainly isn’t the correct word here. I mean to say, Charry was the only one with enough…well, again the word “sophistication,” is also far off the mark. The point being, Charry was the only fellow among us with that magical combination of sheer ignorance and sheer pluck to strike up an idle chat with Thelinda the Tyrant and it seemed to have the most dashed effect on her. Yet, she recovered quickly enough to unfurl another cacophonous cry, “WELL GO THEN AND DON’T BOTHER SPEAKING TO ME AGAIN, YOU HEAR ME!”
At this moment another sound, though not nearly so deafening, reverberated through the air. This was the sound of a coach’s horn. The Thorngrove family chauffeur had arrived and was gesturing with excessive deference towards the open door of the great black leviathan. “I’M COMING!WAIT A MOMENT, WON’T YOU?” shouted the despot in dance shoes. “As you wish, Ms. Thorngrove,” said the poor abused servant before continuing in a most dulcet town, “but your mother, Lady Thorngrove, was most insistent that you return home immediately after your ballet practice, so as not to be tardy for tea. You’ll recall miss that this afternoon your father and mother are meeting with the Elder Scarsmythe and the Reagent–” but here the poor old oni was cut short. “I SAID I’M COMING! ARE YOU DEAF?” Thelinda replied most venomously and somehow louder than before. It appeared as though the old vocal chords were finally warmed up. “Very good, Miss,” said the chauffeur who seemed almost accustomed to this sort of thing.
私はF.F.
“Well darling, until the morrow then, ta-ta!” she said and blew a kiss in my direction before storming off to the coach. I tried to dodge the thing but you never can tell how to properly avoid airborne kisses and was fairly certain I had caught the blighted thing right in the face. “Typical womanly behavior to deploy one last underhanded attack in retreat,” said F.F. and then added solemnly, “Thanks chum, for standing up for me, I mean…I guess my tradecraft does need a bit of work and all.” “Stuff and nonsense,” I said clasping F.F. on the shoulder, “You’re the best strategist around and tomorrow we’ll show her.” “Huzzah!” said Clubby, rallying round. We all gave one more hearty huzzah and headed for home.
First we stopped by Clubby’s house whose siblings were engaged in some form of broad scale massacre in the back yard by the sounds of it. Heading down the driveway he turned and said, “Boy I can’t wait to see the look on Thelinda’s face when we pull the ol’ switcheroo on he! Ha!”
Then saluting smartly, he sped off to the door. F.F. and I continued along not saying much, then upon reaching the threshold of the Flamehouse domicile F.F. asked quietly, “Do you really think that’s why no one talks to me?” looking up with a kind of uncertainty that hardly suited a Major Strategist. I smiled and said, “Well, I talk to you. And so does Clubby, and Charry too. So, you see? What does that silly, stupid girl know? Nothing, that’s what.” F.F. nodded, seemingly cheered by a frank appraisal of the facts at hand.
するとF.F.
“Did you have anyone else in mind you wanted to talk to?” I asked. With that, F.F. chuckled warmly and said, “No, I suppose not.” “Well then, that’s that. I should think you’re quite lucky to have only your fellow soldiers to talk to and not have to worry about whatever idle-headed girls want to talk about, right?” Here F.F. drew up to his full height, placed his hands behind his back and, after his customary three “a-he-hems” said, “Spoken like a man, Master Sergeant.” then gave a crisp salute and added, “Victory or Death!” and marched triumphantly home. I returned the salute and began the long ascent up the hill to the old humble homestead just as the afternoon settled into that cozy, dreamlike time just before sunset. How I wished it might’ve gone on like that forever, but alas, tomorrow was the day of battle.
“What a splendid land this is, and how lovely are its people! Fear not, I promise not to eat anyone!”
