On Mate Selection and Matrimony (and how to avoid both) Part 16
I suppose it would do at this point to clarify a few points vis-a-vis the game in question or else the remainder of my tale, for we are now, at long last, coming to the final portion of the “Thelinda Thornegrove Affair,” may leave some of the keener among you a bit perplexed. For those who don’t care much for these sort of minutiae I shall not be the least bit offended if you skip ahead to the “ready, set, go!” portion, and get on with the real meat and potatoes of the story as it were. For those of you who would prefer a leisurely segue to the soup and fish, or at the very least an appetizer and perhaps, for the more sensitive among you, even an aperitif before diving straight into the main course, you may be interested to learn that our version of what you might call “tag” or “hide and seek” has a few distinct features that would undoubtedly add a far more martial and indeed dangerous element to the children’s game equivalent among cheerful young humans. Now, as far as similarities go, the fundamentals are all very much the same. One group waits a bit, promising not to peek, while another group runs and hides. Then, after some predetermined amount of time has passed, the “seekers” move out to find the “hiders.” Well, that’s all well and good. At least, the gist of it is very much the same for we oni.
Following this, if the “hiders” are found out rules may differ slightly from one place to the next, but in general I’ve been told, and indeed observed first hand on several occasions, that upon discovery the “hiders” (no long hidden) must hightail it to a “base” or “sanctuary.” Again, our own pastime is quite similar here too. I am not sure exactly why, but anytime I’ve happened to come across youngsters playing a game of “oni tag” at a park, the “base” in question is almost always either a prominent tree or a large piece of playground equipment.
Quite often a slide is chosen though I have seen several instances of swings being the preferred choice. Here too, we have much in common and it seems as though trees being synonymous with freedom and sanctuary has some deep connection to the earth and all the creatures in it, and I wonder of the old Norse were not so very off with their notions of the great World Ash and its significance in the fate of all things on earth.
I wonder too if the Christian God was indeed as wise as they say by keeping such a very dangerous tree about the garden, however seeing as how things went for the poor blighters of mankind, I don’t blame him at all for closing Eden to the public and placing guards about. Give some fellows an inch and they’ll take a mile…or is it the other way around?
Well, at any rate, they’ll certainly take your fruit after you’ve expressly forbidden them from doing so and then act very indignant when you call them out on their rudeness. I’d have tossed the blackguards out too, I can tell you, and I wouldn’t have been so kind about it. As far as we oni are concerned trees are sacred, as I’m sure you’re well aware, and plucking their fruit and gorging yourself on it whilst a guest in someone’s garden after they’ve given you free reign over ever other tree except for one strikes me as the height of ingratitude. I don’t mean to speak so harshly of mankind, for we oni have our imperfections to be sure, but such an indiscretion was really beyond the pale. Though I suppose the Christian God, who is, by all accounts, a forgive and forget sort of deity, has long ago let bygones be bygones and mankind has done their best to patch things up since then. All’s well that ends well and all that rot, you know.
Where was I? Oh, yes!
Getting back to the rules of the game, in the variant practiced by the sons of Adam, those caught or “tagged” by the pursuers now, having been captured by the enemy, must forfeit their position as “hiders” and, oh cruel fate, must turn traitor to their own brothers in arms and join the enemy in pursuit. Ah! Now here we have come upon a distinct difference. You see, apart from the fact that merely “tagging” one’s quarry is insufficient as the ribbons must be stripped from the belt, one is effectively not “out of the action” until all ribbons have been removed and even here, there are a few special circumstances one must consider. For one, if even one ribbon remains the contestant is considered “down but not out,” or so the saying goes. He cannot rightly be considered a casualty to matrimony and, so long as he is quick and resourceful is at liberty to…well, to preserve his liberty and flee for the goal.
As I mentioned previously, at least three ribbons must be collected by the same female in order for the poor blighter in question to be considered “captured” or “betrothed” as those more inclined to cast a romantic overtone to this barbarous practice would be likely to say. Now, females being a contentious and irrational sex, there are – as I’m sure you can imagine – instances wherein the same poor devil is set upon by multiple ogresses at once and, in the fury and conflagration of the struggle, one vixen makes off with two ribbons while another snatches away two more and the prey manages to wriggle away with one remaining ribbon until the conclusion of the game.
Well, under these special circumstances a “decider’s duel” must be fought after the end of “regulation time,” to determine to whom the spoils of victory belong. In practice, this means the two females in question square off in a traditional oni wrestling bout, which I am told bears a remarkable similarity to the Japanese martial art tradition of “Sumo.” I would say this is indeed not a bad description for the wrestling does take place in a ring, and if one wrestler throws another wrestler outside of the ring they are declared the victor. However, Sumo is a far more well-regulated and, might I add, graceful sport by comparison to our own savage customs.
While not absolutely anything goes, it is a far more bestial sort of combat when compared to the elegant movements of the Sumo wrestler. Now, to be clear, it is considered unsporting to gouge an opponent’s eyes and biting is also strongly discouraged. It is also considered somewhat unbecoming and unladylike to spit or deliberately cast dirt, whether by kicking or the more direct and effective method of using one’s hands, into the face of an opponent so as to obstruct their vision – although this is not explicitly prohibited by the rules. Contrariwise, removing one’s garments and using them for the purpose of strangling a fellow combatant is decidedly against the rules, as is using any concealed or improvised weaponry to aid in the act of bludgeoning. Other than these few exceptions, the hellcats are free to use any means at their disposal to eject their opponent from the ring, render them unconscious, or compel them to shout, “Mercy!” at which point any further acts of violence result in disqualification. After the winner is declared, she collects her prize, often in quite the disheveled state and the scene, despite the exuberant cheers of the crowd, is hardly the sort of thing that would make for a photo attached to a wedding invitation. Of course it varies, but generally speaking there are at least one or two of these “decider’s duels” following the main event.
Oh, incidentally I forgot to mention a moment ago when speaking of the conclusion of the game, as I’m sure you’re curious to know if this rather complicated game of tag takes all bally day to be over and done with at last. Well, in a manner of speaking, yes. It does take all bally day and, counting the ceremonial activities and post-competition revelries, it continues into the night as well and from there carries on into the wee hours of the morning on the following day, which is a day of continued feasting, though not begun any earlier than high noon for reasons of health and safety. But, returning to the matter in question, traditionally, the end of the game is said to be at “sunset,” though the official timing as to the competition’s conclusion is ultimately left to the determination of the judges. As I have noted in the past we oni are not so precise or exact as those inhabitants of the realm of mankind in regards to keeping time or constructing instruments for this express purpose.
While nearly all of us have a vague idea of what is meant by “hours” and “minutes” and, further, that very brief moments are measured in something called “seconds” we don’t apply ourselves so rigorously to keeping track of each and every one, as this seems to be quite the tedious effort. Hence, it is a matter of no small debate if by sunset one means to say that time of day when the sky dons its radiant pajamas of orange-reddish, purple hues and prepares for a well-earned slumber – depending on the season of course – or if sunset is properly categorized as the exact moment when the sun has truly turned in for the day, sunken below the horizon, and the first stars of evening begin to shine forth in the night sky. However, for the purposes of the Oni Youth games, it is generally accepted that the former is determined as “sunset” and this is largely due to practical reasons. For one it provides a more amicable setting for the celebration dance (yes, regrettably there is another one following the event’s conclusion) for the victors (or weeping for the vanquished) and it also allows ample time for the villagers to return to town for further feasting and merriment before it gets too dark to see the path homeward without the aid of a lantern.
Now, as I may have alluded to before when this whole recollection began, one cannot simply hide and “run out the clock” as this is seen as both ungentlemanly and decidedly unsporting. In fact, the punishment for such behavior is being assigned a bride for lack of initiative, typically the least desirable old maid/cat herder in that year’s competition. In the event that there are multiple hold outs – an extremely rare occurrence – and a shortage of aging shrews, the offenders are offered the choice of joining the sages in training with no great pomp and ceremony or, should they prefer, exile. Again you’ll note how genuinely unfair all this seems, for indeed it is. So, with the exception of the great “hold-out rebellion” in which many ages ago a league of ten spirited oni youths decided to hideaway forever during the games and, as the legend goes, eventually turned into stones, ossified by their sheer cowardice, until they eventually grew into the Fogsong Mountains which, to this day, are notorious for their nasty weather and unpleasant clime – contingencies concerning holdouts are few and far between.
Though, I suspect this story is one of those “cautionary tales for children,” devised to teach some moral lesson and has little factual merit as far as the historical record is concerned. At any rate, the way this plays out in practice is that just as the sun begins to set, there is often a great slaughter of ribbons that takes place as the would-be holdouts, lacking the pluck and guile necessary to preserve their freedom, make a frenzied, last-minute dash for the goal, hoping against hope, to reach the sanctuary and secure their freedom. Sadly for these misguided youths, they are are almost without exception offered as a great hecatomb into the meat grinder of the termagant phalanx. True, one or two may miraculously slip through the deadly fray and escape to the goal with their ribbons unclaimed, but in general, all are devoured by the insatiable maw of ravenous females. Therefore, if one is serious about preserving one’s bachelorhood, it does not pay to procrastinate. One can see why all that business that Shakespeare said about, letting ‘I dare not’ wait upon ‘I would,” applies not only to cats but to we oni as well. He was very good about those sort of things, and had he been born an oni, I am convinced he would’ve had more than a few things to say about this whole uncivilized practice. In fact, I suspect it would’ve made for good subject matter for one of his comedies.
Now, a final note on the rules as I’m sure all but a handful of you are quite eager for the climax of the tale to commence and perhaps are not so keen on learning all the finer details of our quaint ways and peculiar customs. Still, it’s a very tricky bit of business, I mean determining when one has said enough, that is, and given all the necessary context. For if you err in this, a good deal of fellows will be turning pages one moment and the very next saying to themselves, “well, now, wait a minute, he never explained this bit,” or, “why didn’t this poor oaf just do X instead of Y” (or A instead of B if you prefer), and I’d hate to make the more fastidious readers feel as though they’ve been cheated out of a proper ending. At the same time, no doubt theres plenty good and solid folk who began with some minor interest in the ins-and-outs of how we oni “play tag” and now are wishing ever so much to dispense with all these mundane technicalities and hurry up and get on with the show. Hence my mentioning all this at the onset so as to try to satisfy both parties – a dashed difficult business really.
Well, no doubt the more curious among you have perhaps noted a crucial flaw in our arcane and bizarre matrimonial practices as far as the nature of the competition is concerned, and are probably thinking something along the lines of, “Why don’t the lads just make a mad sprint for the goal and simply outrun all these harpies?” Ah, if only it were that simple. For you see, we are not only required to spend the first portion of the contest hiding, but we are further not permitted to make for the goal until the “chase” portion of the match is announced by the judges. Again, as to the exact timing for this, I couldn’t say.
Instead, I will ask you to imagine, if you will, that you have been summoned for some banal bit of paperwork processing, as I’m told humans must do from time to time. There you sit in some poorly lit, unpleasant “office” of sorts wherein so-called “public servants” who do anything but serve the public, mindlessly shuffle papers. This is not the sort of place one feels at ease, but rather a bureaucratic limbo realm wherein restrooms are cleaned only once a fortnight. Now, further imagine you’ve attempted to minimize your wait time in this apparatchik dungeon having arrived bright and early just when this “service for the public” opened for business, usually around 11 am as public servants cannot be bothered to get up too early, and for this reason I consider them to be quite clever.
At any rate, there you sit, thinking to yourself that it certainly didn’t seem too crowded in the waiting room when you walked in, and not too many other poor souls have trickled in since your arrival, but your number still hasn’t been called and you’ve been sitting just long enough to wonder why chairs in waiting rooms are always so hideously uncomfortable and you’re just about to approach the “help desk” (which is always totally incapable of providing assistance of any kind) and very politely inquire how much longer it will be until you can have your license stamped, or papers renewed, or address changed, or whatever other cripplingly dull procedure is – for some unknown reason – absolutely essential to be processed or else society as a whole may very well collapse, and right as you’re about to stand up, you are summoned by some dead-eyed serf, announcing that your widgets can now be woggled, or whatever it is that must be done to preserve the commonwealth.
This is roughly the amount of time it takes before the judges determine sufficient time has been allotted for the “hiders” to hide, and the “seeking” can now begin. This is announced with a tremendously loud blast on the Goghelleronhorn, which is not so much a musical instrument as it is what I am told man of present times would classify as a “sonic weapon,” and can be heard by all creatures living and dead from one hamlet to the next. It is approximately, by my own humble estimate, three times as loud as a typical Thelinda Thorngrove outburst, just to give you an idea of how truly deafening this contraption is and how there can be no mistake among the “hiders” that the hyenas have been let loose. Now you may say, “Well, that’s all well and good but certainly with that kind of a head start, couldn’t you just as easily sprint to the goal?” and this may seem perfectly reasonable. However, I strongly suspect you assume that anything so dignified or fair-minded as having the horde of the fairer sex all enter “the hunting ground” from the same starting point would be de riguer.
Sadly, this is not so.
No, you see, in the time period following the dance and after the prayer a strange lull, a sort of calm before the storm begins, as the cruel huntresses are led away and the flower of the oni youth are left to form their bands and make their peace with the gods before this fiendish game commences. Meanwhile, the contemptible shrew brigade are stationed strategically in a circumference, if that’s the geometrical term I want, around the boundary of the playing field. They are allegedly “blindfolded” and placed in groups outside the perimeter while the bachelors set off to hide. I say allegedly because I suspect every manner of foul play conceivable when the noxious combination of young girls and aged aunts are in cahoots and expected to “play fair” in any sort of competition, as the so-called gentler sex is utterly bereft of both honor and sportsmanship, hence there being no word for “sportswomanship.”
At any rate, there is always a conspicuous concentration of the gorgons within close proximity to the goal, despite the fact that the regulations stipulate that the assigning of entry points to the field of contest shall be “randomized.” Ha, a very likely story indeed. It was, in fact, as a result of the peerless excellence of Hardbite the Swift (whom I’ve alluded to before) that this new rule was implemented in the first place. Yes, when even one great oni male stood up against the tyranny of the fairer sex, there was all at once a great initiative to change the rules which had been well-established for a millennia or more in order to promote, “fairness and equality.” Truly a revolting inversion of the spirit of competition itself, wherein a parliament of old hags and other assorted autocratic shrews would describe a game wherein one side is immediately surrounded by the enemy before the contest even begins in earnest as a “fair and equal” arrangement. However, as the sun and moon would trade places half a dozen times before we could sufficiently examine the appalling irrationality and injustice which fuels the endless wiles and machinations of she-onis, let us suffice it to say that, “making a desperate dash for the goal as soon as you’re able,” is no longer a viable stratagem.
Well, there you have it. There are a few other minor notes I suppose I could’ve included regarding contingencies for injured participants, penalties for minor infractions, and punishments for more serious forms of cheating, but, in a nutshell, the preceding paragraphs more or less entail all the governing statutes and practices of the “Oni Youth Games.” I daresay if anything else comes to mind it will have to be relayed in media res, if that’s the term I’m searching for. All that is left now is to return to the scene of events of that day, and see what fates have in store for our merry band of intrepid warriors as the long-awaited trial begins.
“What a splendid land this is, and how lovely are its people! Fear not, I promise not to eat anyone!”
