On Mate Selection and Matrimony (and how to avoid both) Part 3

Greetings dear readers, and may this find you well and in a comfortable chair with a bit of time on your hands, for this entry is a bit longer than usual with more to follow for the conclusion. In addition, I had forgotten to mention last time, but I suspect many of you were wondering why instances for breaking the rules are so few and far between. As I know many of you are quite thoughtful and empathetic humans, you must curious as to why, with one’s freedom on the line, more oni lads wouldn’t be keen to risk a simple infraction for the chance of maintaining their precious independence. Well, I regret to inform you, dear readers, that the punishment (for male participants) are quite severe indeed.

If a single rule is determined to be broken even accidentally or without malice, the perpetrator is assigned, that is arranged to be wed to, whatever poor “cat-herder” failed to secure her mate at the close of the games. If multiple rules are broken and if there was clear intention to blatantly disregard the tradition and high spirit of the games, well, the official sentence is exile from one’s home village and effectively, once the infernal aunts get their gossip information network up and running, oni society writ large. Furthermore, the exile can only be appealed after a period of three hundred years which even for we long-lived oni, is quite a stretch of time. So, it’s only the very mad or very plucky sort of oni who attempts it. Of course there is the wonderful and thrilling tale of “Longhorn Sharpshanks” the famous oni pirate who, upon being exiled convinced half his hamlet to join him upon the high seas and returned several centuries later loaded with treasure from all corners of the earth, but more on this another time perhaps. I should mention that to add insult to injury the prescribed punishment on the female side of the equation is merely disqualification and a “handicap” of wearing a large boulder tied about the waist at the following season’s games.

Believe it or not, even this supposed penalty has been – on more than one occasion – used to the advantage of the huntresses. One year, in a neighboring prefecture, several females (again no rule against teaming up in groups larger than two) got the very crafty idea of pushing the boulder up a large hill just adjacent to the “Sanctuary Zone” and then rolled it down (with the previous season’s cheater still attached) upon some of the runners just as they approached their long sought after prize. The offending girl didn’t mind being decidedly banged up afterwards as her selected mate was nearly crushed by the cursed thing, just a few inches away from freedom, and the other sad lot were so petrified by this that they were easy pickings for the rest of the harpies. I tell you, dear readers, she-oni are some of the most terrifying yokai on earth in the throes of the hunt. At any rate, I suppose I should describe the event itself in greater detail.

The ceremony begins with the eligible males (many of them forced to attend against their will and better judgment) lining up in battle array across the eligible females (nearly all of them of similar age, minus the odd aforementioned cat-farmer or two, but noticeably dissimilar in disposition) as the drums and flutes accompany the procession of the local sage and elder oni.  At this point a speech which is almost always far too long, is given as part of the official commencement. Speeches should not, in our view, exceed the point of time wherein one begins to notice the tip of one’s nose has suddenly become quite itchy and must be scratched immediately to relieve the maddening discomfort.  Invariably, at some point in the speech, just as everyone is beginning to doze off the sage is apt to say something like, “On this day of great pomp and ceremony we wish our cherished male youths the fleetest of feet and the best of luck,” or another similar standby, before ending with something like, “…and to our fairest flowers, our delicate damsels in waiting, we wish you happy hunting!” Now here, much to everyone’s relief, the formalities are largely at an end and following the applause and cheers of the spectators the band strikes up the “Hymn of the Hard Pursued” (the melody of which haunts the dreams of many a sensitive young oni lad – and me to this very day) and each side takes up their respective posts, with the males forming their “pairs” while the females are given a final few minutes to review their diabolical stratagems.  It is here, dear readers, in the midst of battle wherein friends are forged for life and this is where I shall begin my own tale of that fateful day.

I don’t suppose I have yet mentioned it, but while I come from good, solid oni-stock from the very heartland of the country, I have no great name nor noble household to which I may lay claim. I say this without pretense or shame, as we “solid stock” (as our sort often refer to ourselves) oni are truly the sturdy core of the great American oni diaspora. Now, as a result of this relatively ordinary but by no means pitiable or impoverished origins this left me with the rather advantageous position of being able to get along with just about anybody. In the languid days of my youth, I was never found wanting for the companionship of my chums and, can say without reservation, that I had quite the idyllic childhood. Then one blighted day, this blissful period of carefree, simple joys took a decided turn for the worse when, for reasons that remain mysterious to this day and only the gods and perhaps some of the very wisest elder oni know, a certain calamity descended upon my halcyon adolescence like a great cloud of darkness foreboding a terrible storm, a cloud that went by the name of: Thelinda Thorngrove.

Now, Ms. Thorngrove (or so her ghastly name renders approximately in human speech) is of the Hillside Thorngroves and not to be confused with the Bayside Thorngroves who lived several hamlets far to the south and, as I understand it, were like me, common but sturdy oni folk – just to avoid any unnecessary confusion and unwarranted libel suits in my direction.

At any rate, Thelinda was of a decidedly different upbringing and background. On her mother’s side she was of the Clawsprites clan, an exceedingly wealthy merchant family that established the “Yokai Freight and Supply Company” nearly three millennia ago. Despite being a rather distant relative of the founders, when a given family piles up enough gold and treasure it tends to get spread rather wide, and even second or third cousins seem to benefit – usually whilst contributing very little I might add. So, suffice it to say, they were easily the wealthiest family in our humble hamlet and it made general comings and goings with them a sort of guarded and – depending on the caller – unpleasantly sycophantic affair. Yes, dear readers, I fear we oni are much like the peoples of mankind in this regard, and far too often influenced by money, prestige, and that sort of thing.

Now to further complicate matters, her father was Brawnhand Thorngrove, the great championship oni wrestler and perhaps the most noteworthy oni ever produced in our humble, country setting. Following his retirement from the sporting life he became, thanks to his wife’s fortune, something of a “wheeler and dealer” and a kind of unofficial local magistrate. The Thornegroves had seven children which was a bit unusual given their considerable means (if you’ll recall twenty or so being the average among our kin) and even more peculiar – all female, with Thelinda being the eldest.

It seemed to many a cruel fate that such a famed athlete should not be able to train up his son to follow him in the pursuit of competitive glory. However Mr. Thornegrove was not dismayed in the least by the somewhat unusual predicament of his progeny. On the contrary, convinced that if he’d had a son he’d never be able to live up to his father’s peerlessness in the ring, he reasoned that this was surely a sign from the heavens that it was his duty to raise the greatest she-oni athlete the earth had ever seen. And so, he pursued this aim with all his heart, completely undaunted by its rather unconventional nature, and was all too gratified that his firstborn should be equally keen to take up the task. For, Thelinda wasn’t only a championship wrestler, but also spear thrower, boulder roller, and – much to my terror – runner. Indeed, she excelled in just about anything that involved working up a good sweat and necessitated a lot of huffing and puffing, much to the approval of her father.

Now her mother (as I mentioned a very meek and reserved she-oni whom Thelinda resembled not a little and took after in personality not at all) insisted that she also devote time to “improving her mind” and mandated various cultural practices such as playing the flute and reading “the classic texts of learned yokai” and the general sort of busy-body, over-achieving kind of “box checker” activities that the pitiable offspring of the elite often must endure. Thelinda, by all accounts did very well in these matters too, but hardly took to her studies with the same relish as she did physical education, probably because there was no one to “defeat” in reading history and no one to “gloat over” after playing a flawless rendition of “The Old Oni’s Waltz” on the wooden flute. So despite her mother’s best efforts to add a touch of feminine daintiness to her headstrong daughter, it was largely decorative and took no root in her person or manner.

On top of this, she inherited her father’s stentorian voice and could be heard at least a thousand yards off when she whispered, and had a laugh that resembled a sound you might expect a cat to make if you were to suddenly drop a grand piano on its tail. She also had a temper so short it would probably be diagnosed with dwarfism – if such a thing was possible – which would cause her deep blue pigmentation to turn a vicious sort of purple when in the throes of a violent rage (not at all an infrequent occurrence). She would “take all comers” as it were and was chiefly known amongst my pals and I as, “that awful girl who makes the boys cry” or, in a slightly more literary sense, “Thelinda the Terror.”

She was also, for some reason that to this very day I cannot begin to fathom, madly in love with me.

As the weeks became months and the months became years, my dear old school chums, sympathetic but powerless, saw me for what I was: a doomed oni. My parents, right from the start, were not only seemingly unaware of what a catastrophe this represented but, on the contrary, found the whole matter rather endearing. I have a great fondness for my parents, as a rule, but they are the sort of “standard pattern,” oni that could not begin to appreciate what a horror had descended upon their poor offspring. My father was, despite a somewhat gruff appearance even among oni, and is to this day, an eminently reasonable fellow and in situations of great distress or emergency always had a sort of, “Come now, son and think for a moment,” response to the matter at hand. He insisted that, “She’s really not such a bad girl, you know. Why, underneath it all, I’m guessing she’s quite sweet, comes from a good family too, no need to be so gloomy.” My mother too was no help in this regard and, being a naturally kindhearted she-oni of the first water, had the habitual response of “Well isn’t that just wonderful?” to virtually any announcement, ever in search of a silver lining even under the enormous black storm cloud of Thelinda Thorngrove. So, when she heard the news, after chuckling slightly at my morose expression, she gathered me in her arms and, predictably, responded with “Well isn’t that just wonderful? You’ll be sure to have darling children, and they’ll want for nothing in the world. Why, we truly we must be thankful.”

Despite my earnest protestations that this was a crisis of the highest order and that I should sooner have my horns pulled out by the roots and my claws removed one by one with a pair of red-hot blacksmith’s tongs than be married to Thelinda Thorngrove, I was met with an unchanging refrain of “Come now, son…” and “Isn’t that just wonderful?” from my progenitors. In fact the only time I got a different reaction during the “Thorngrove Affair” as it came to be known, was when I suggested that I had no other choice and would simply have to best her in the “Youth Games,” at which point both my parents paused and then, quite suddenly, burst into a fit laughter. Apparently no one had even considered the possibility that I might overcome this tribulation and escape my gruesome fate, no one except my dear old friend, Charry.

The “Youth Games” had just be announced for the following spring. So, after school one day I told Charry I had something devilishly important to tell him and to meet me under the old covered bridge by the riverbed in an hour. I figured even with his bad memory he couldn’t very well forget in only an hour’s time. Well, as it turns out he very nearly did all the same, but as if a sign from the heavens that the fates hadn’t abandoned me just yet, he managed to turn up around two hours later. “Ho there!” he called, “Sorry, I came across a new comic in the shop and the story was so keen that I had nearly forgotten about meeting up. Anyways, what’s up?”

Until next time!

I stood there, trying to look serious and muster the expression of what I imagined a general in the old days of the “Great Oni Wars” must have looked like prior to the announcement of a grand campaign. “Charry, I’ve got to win at the Youth Games or I really will be stuck with Thelinda. I’ve just got to, but I can’t do it alone. Will you help me?” I asked extending my hand. Charry, stout fellow, didn’t so much as snicker. Instead he smiled his crooked, friendly smile and took my hand saying, “Of course, pal. We’ll beat her together!” In this moment, I thanked all the gods and wise yokai of old to have a true friend in a time of trouble. “So, what’s the plan?” he asked cheerfully, and here we began to devise our most desperate stratagem.

“What a splendid land this is, and how lovely are its people! Fear not, I promise not to eat anyone!”
