On Mate Selection and Matrimony (and how to avoid both) Part 2
Greetings dear readers, and may this message find you well. As you’ll no doubt recall we were speaking just the other day of the perilous pitfalls and peculiar practices of the “mating dance” and other various rituals of courtship. To continue where we left off, I assume many of you are quite familiar with the game of 「鬼ごっこ」and perhaps even played a good deal of it throughout your childhood. Well, this business of “oni-tag” (for in this respect we American Oni are near identical to our Japanese cousins, indeed one might call this a universal “rite” among our storied and proud peoples) may appear to the casual observer to be nothing more than a children’s game, buy I can assure you, the practice is far more akin to “war” than play, and the consequences of defeat are no less than life and liberty. Now, the basic rules are indeed somewhat similar to the human variant. One group of players hide while the pursuers, the designated “oni” waits until an appointed time and then seek out their prey. However, here the similarities end, and I shall now divulge (to the extent that I am permitted via our customs and codes of honor) the true nature of this most dangerous game. As you can imagine, in the same manner wherein we oni often misunderstand the various the nuances and subtleties of human cultural practices, mankind has – to give a generous appraisal – gotten the gist of the matter without fully understanding the underlying objectives.
For you see, dear readers, as you well know by now, as we oni are rather long-lived our “courtship,” or “captivity” as some would see it, is a lengthy process with several stages that precede the formal nuptials – the day of doom in question. And this arduous journey toward matrimony begins with 「鬼ごっこ」being the culmination of the “Oni Youth Games,” wherein the fates of many soon-to-be-betrothed oni youths are decided – or rather, sealed. Now, before diving into the particulars which I fear would only serve to cause confusion, the object of the game is as follows: young she-onis chase after their desired mate, and must collect from his so-called “bachelor’s sash” at least two of the five ribbons attached thereon to claim her prize. She may set upon as many poor victims as she likes, but if she collects more than two ribbons from multiple prey she must decide upon one, and one only at the close of the games – you’ll be relieved to know that we oni are not so uncivilized as to practice bigamy despite our rusticated and ancient ways. Now, if another she-oni, desiring the same mate collects, let’s say three out of five of her chosen male’s ribbons, she has “won the prize,” so to speak and any competing she-oni, even if she had a whole slew of ribbons from other poor chaps, must concede defeat as ribbons cannot be traded or bartered. However, at the end of the game, victorious she-oni are given the opportunity to trade their quarry with another competitor, and would you believe that we poor blighted males have no say in the negotiations! Yes, truly an archaic and draconian custom. Finally, if two she-onis each have two ribbons belonging to the same target, then the two females may fight for right to claim her coveted mate. These battles take place following the end of the game and serve as a kind of “extra innings” or “overtime” or what have you and are always thoroughly enjoyed by the spectators.
Now, fear not my dear readers as things are not entirely helpless for the poor male youths, for if one can make good his escape to the designated “sanctuary zone” and no single she-oni has captured two or more of his ribbons, then the fortunate fellow is effectively “out of the running” for the mating season and free to enjoy his independence until the games resume the following season. I’ve been told that in human games of tag upon reaching this happy space of freedom youngsters often shout things like “olly-olly-oxen-free” or sometimes the slightly abridged version, “home free” but we oni have no such custom, as some moments of happiness are beyond feeble words. The “sanctuary zone” is almost always placed on a high hilltop or even a mountain, depending on the terrain. In more coastal climes or fertile plains it is often placed at the edge of a cliff overlooking the sea or near a great, sacred tree or any place signifying hallowed ground, and rightly so, for nothing quite resembles heaven on earth as the sight of the sanctuary in the midst of the dreadful hunt. I suppose I should also mention that this pendulous phrase, “the following season” doesn’t imply that the games automatically take place the following year or even the year after that but, on average, falls between seven and fourteen human years, depending on the customs and practices of that particular hamlet or prefecture, or what have you – we’ll leave the territorial designations of oni-kind for another day.
Now, you may be curious as to why such a long (in human terms) span is allowed between these games and if this does not foster a kind of irresponsible and indolent spirit among our young males, to say nothing of increasing the old-maid/cat-herder population among the females. You must first consider that we oni, once mated and the war of the sexes at an official armistice, are rather proficient in the production of offspring – as you might’ve surmised from my frequent references to my extensive relations – and that twenty or so “pups” as we call our little ones, per household is quite common for the average oni couple. So, it simply wouldn’t do to rush the nuptials for the whole tribe and remove any spirit of competition and clemency towards young and ambitious oni, (despite the earnest protestations of meddling aunts) or we should be utterly awash in infants and lack the resources and the energy (due to accumulated sleeplessness) to properly care for our young. Thus by spacing things out in this manner, we give ourselves a bit of breathing room and do not risk such dangerous REM cycle deficiency. Secondly, my dear readers, I must ask that you to keep in mind our comparatively long lifespans, and note that for we oni, fifty or seventy odd human years is considered just about the right amount of time for a young oni lad to “sew his wild oats” as you might say, with a century being sort of the “upper bound” as it were for “respectable oni.”
I should also add that this is further complicated by the downright unjust and hidebound custom that a maximum of seven “deferments” (as they are called) are allowed. Yes, even if some stout-hearted, champion oni was to have a flawless escape record, meaning not a single ribbon taken from his sash in seven consecutive games, such as “Hardbite the Swift” (as his name roughly renders in human tongue) the slaves to convention would still demand his “retirement.” Well, you say to yourself, this would mean such a champion would be “free and clear,” right? I mean, it would only be fitting that such a remarkable oni could, if he so chose, remain a confirmed old bachelor for life given his impeccable record. I regret to inform you, kind-hearted humans that you are for coming to this most reasonable conclusion, that in this case other routes and methods (no doubt the work of scheming aunts) are employed to tie down any so spirited a fellow, and the tethers of “social convention” are used to debase this athletic triumph and enslave this champion among champions to some idle-headed female who probably has enlisted half the village to entrap this one-in-ten-thousand oni to gratify her own devious machinations and…and…well, it’s altogether unfair, that’s what! It’s unfair, I say, to mar this great achievement and say, “You may join the sages-in-training or face ostracism: choose,” but that’s precisely what would occur if a fellow truly stuck to his guns and maintained that he had never been tamed by any she-oni huntress. Yes, even “Hardbite the Swift” according to the tale, retired “honorably” and the next season was betrothed to the club-forger’s daughter. Yes, sadly in these rare cases there is usually a grand ceremony wherein the oni in question lays down his ribbons and begins the first step of his engagement. I count myself most fortunate that I have never had to witness such an indignity in person. Yes, I can imagine some of you with more excitable temperaments might find this practice quite wholesome and romantic and whatnot, but the point still stands it’s dashed inequitable when you really get down to it. I mean…well…what do I mean exactly?
Hrmmm. I suppose my larger point being that, for any young oni lad of real spirit, unless he is so unfortunate as to be struck down in his youth by cupid’s arrow, bewitched and robbed of his good senses in the cradle of his adolescence, the “Youth Games” represents perhaps his first genuine crisis and the first real challenge of his life. Why the hairs still stand up on my neck when I recollect my first run “at the games” and the fateful events of that day. Indeed, as one’s freedom is at stake and as securing “sanctuary” offers a significant delay from the first of many matrimonial gauntlets, it is not only imperative to not leave anything to chance, but to use every means of cunning available – without breaking the rules, that is.
Now, as for the additional rules – and here is where we significantly part ways from mankind in this “game” – they are somewhat “open to interpretation” and in rare instances even require the intervention of elders or a “judgment” from one of the sages, but let us leave aside these objects of historical oddity for another time. In general, male onis are barred from using “unmanly force” (biting, scratching, eye-pokes, etc.) and any weapon (yes, our trusty clubs are robbed from us) to dissuade our pursuers. We are also forbidden from using any implements to unfairly secure our ribbons to our sash, such as paste, or fasteners, or any kind of “enchantment” to prevent removal of the ribbon – say for example without the utterance of some secret phrase to break the spell. We are further prohibited from using any “yokai-related assistance” meaning we cannot enlist the service of any other yokai (save our fellow oni) to make good our escape, fend off, or otherwise impede our would-be captors, or do anything that would constitute an “unfair advantage.” For example, one may not equip an 「笈の化け物」or “backpack monster” to ensure that any she-oni honing in for the tackle would be met with blast of fire from the mouth of the startled yokai (Yes, this is one of those “bizarre incidents” that caused the rule to come into being in the first place. Truly, a most ingenious solution). This would also, necessarily, ban anything like, say, bribing a「小天狗」or “lesser tengu” with some trinket of gold or what have you (unlike their enlightened cousins, they are most susceptible to such things) and having him swoop down from the sky – at some appointed time during the hunt – and carry the cunning but morally impaired young oni all the way to the “sanctuary zone,” and dropping him off safe and sound with very little exertion on his part. Incidentally, the “sanctuary zone” and the several hundred yards or so surrounding it is always heavily fortified with observers or what you might call “referees” to prevent this sort of thing and report any unsportsmanlike conduct.
This rule also, as I’m sure you’ve guessed by now, precludes making use of any “sympathetic confidants,” as such. So, the idea of, hypothetically speaking, asking if an old「河童」(kappa) who resided in a nearby river that just so happened to cross into the established field of play if he, out of the goodness of his heart, would be so kind as to give a less than entirely truthful account of where certain members of the male troupe were hiding and in what direction they fled – well, you get the idea. This sort of thing is also quite frowned upon (and that old kappa was entirely useless anyway and deaf as a stump and couldn’t be relied upon to remember his own name…again, hypothetically).
Now, you might say to yourself, “Well, what about the females?” and here, as if to give the whole game away, you will see where some predictable imbalances arise. First of all, the female team are not limited to operate in “pairs” like we males, and – barring clubs, pointed weapons, or anything that would cause serious injury – are not barred from practically ANY tools or tricks for entrapment. Ropes, snares, nets, you name it! Why, I once heard a story of one fiendishly clever she-oni who went so far as to devise a sort of trebuchet and launched herself directly onto her chosen mate. Well, needless to say the poor devil had absolutely no chance of outrunning what was tantamount to an oni-shaped artillery shell and was nearly knocked unconscious by the impact.
He was hardly in a position to resist after that, at which point she calmly collected his ribbons and claimed her prize. No disqualification for utilizing what as clearly an “unfair advantage,” not even a review among the judges – so much for fairness and sportsmanship in the war of the sexes!
Until next time!
Next time I’ll relate my first foray into this savage custom of ours and share a tale of friendship and romance that I’m sure you’ll find most worth while.
Until next time!
“What a splendid land this is, and how lovely are its people! Fear not, I promise not to eat anyone!”
