On Sleep and Fearlessness
Salutations and good day, my friends. I hope this message finds you well and that you are also not feeling too tired or too worn out, as this seems to be a relatively common occurrence as these warm summer evenings continue. Enjoyable as they may be, the fatigue produced by the unabated heat is very real indeed, to say nothing of the dangers of “heatstroke,” (which I hope you are all taking due precaution to avoid) and I sense that this sort of “wilted” state that one is apt to experience in the summer months (as noted by American author Harper Lee in her seminal and nearly singular work To Kill a Mockingbird – the passage contains a wonderful comparison to women wilting like soft tea cakes in the heat, have you read the book? You should, it’s wonderful!). Yes, I believe we can all agree that the heat has the general effect of making things a bit hazier and lazier in general. This makes it all the more astonishing that the Japanese have so many summer festivals and many of them in July and of course Obon in August. Why, it speaks very highly to their resolute character in persisting through many exhausting traditional activities in spite of the punishing heat. Though, I should think that listening to nature more closely would reveal a stronger impetus to relax a bit, as opposed to take up some frenzied activity, splendid though the Obon dance, the Gozan no Okuribi, and other Obon festivities are. Perhaps we’ll talk more on that later as the season draws nearer, but for now let’s reflect for a moment on this idea of sleep and this very strange, as I’ve alluded to in a previous entry, human characteristic of viewing this great boon from the heavens as a “nuisance” or a “troublesome necessity.”
This, dear readers, is not a healthy disposition and I caution against anyone who would argue that your valuable slumber time should be wrested from you for some trivial activity, in particular one that involves a great deal of “work” or anything of a similarly strenuous and unpleasant nature. Now this might leave one to assume that we oni are quite slothful or even negligent of our duties and responsibilities but, I can assure you this is nothing more than a common misconception (one I personally believe the tanuki and their ilk are responsible for spreading among humans, but we’ll save that for another day). The plain truth of the matter is that we oni, know that rest is an essential part of our bodily and inner life – for how else does one receive the mysteries of the gods and the celestial beings but in the realm of dreams, and waking dreams are often given in the form of what I believe you call “visions” and only in a time of genuine emergency.
What then is to be expected from mankind when he neglects his precious repose and beloved bed, all too infrequently robbed of sleep, and therefore deprived from the blessed presence of the muses or the wisdom of the messengers of heaven? It is, my estimation – being but a humble, country oni – that it is no mere coincidence that those who are constantly barking and braying for more toiling and less sleeping not only seem to lack the faculties to consider how this may prevent one from truly giving their all (being perpetually sleep-deprived) as it were, but also conveniently do not apply these same unhealthy demands inward. Now, it is true enough that the average Japanese “supervisor” does indeed spend interminably long hours “at the office” but as we have already touched upon in a pervious discussion this does not take into account the amount of “pretending to work,” which I am convinced continues to occupy an ever expanding portion of the “work day.” And truly, this ill-used and deceitful expression gives the whole game away, for nearly everyone who engages in some form of work, regardless of their chosen (or in most cases haphazardly stumbled upon) “career” finds themselves working long after the sun has retired for the day and the evening begins anew.
Hence, I find it most unfortunate and indeed saddening that virtually all humans can’t see this entire game for what it is, namely: a contemptible tanuki prank. Look here now, you agree to work for the day so that you may later rest in comfort, presumably with a sturdy roof over your head, a full belly, and a comfortable bed or futon to rest upon along with neither too plush nor too lumpy of a pillow and, while we’re at it and for good measure and good digestion, topping things off with a nice cup of chamomile tea. I can certainly understand the necessity for these comforts even as a fairly stout-hearted and well-built oni, and therefore am all the more appreciative of how these things are downright essential for mankind, for most humans are ill-equipped (as our discussion of footwear was a recent example) for sleeping outdoors, under the night sky without at least some means of shelter and privacy. However, consider what a poor bargain this is, for the accouterments we’ve just described can be obtained for a pittance, and yet how many hours of cherished sleep has been robbed from you as you burned the midnight oil all for what was deceptively called a “work day,”? I ask you my dear friends, is this the sort of thing an upright creature would do? Is this the sort of pact a straightforward and honest being would proffer be they man, god, or yokai? I think not. Furthermore, it strikes me as all the more obvious that this is nothing but some cheap chicanery and trickery when one further examines that such unscrupulous contracts invariably contain an even more ridiculous notion which goes by the name of “overtime work.”
Now, I ask you again, who could possibly take such a patently asinine idea seriously for even one moment? First of all, how can “overtime” possibly exist? Why the term itself is nothing but a blatant oxymoron of the first degree. If something is “over” then you are, by definition, out of “time,” and if you are out of time, then how could you possibly do any work? We’ve already seen what malevolent chicanery these weavers of lies engage in by their ever expanding “workday,” and if this were not enough, it would appear these contemptible megalomaniacs are not content with calling the night the day, but would seek to ascend to the realm of the gods and invent a new dimension of “time” itself. What effrontery and cheek! The men (or as I strongly suspect the tanuki) who concocted these insane falsehoods and had the disdainful temerity to inflict them upon innocent, hardworking people deserve to bashed with a thousand clubs straight down to the depths of King Enma’s throne. I tell you, friends, you should have no more to do with any of this lunacy propagated by such solipsistic ne’er-do-wells!
Now you may say, “Yes but you sir are an oni and despite your humble bucolic origins, possess great strength and vigor, but alas I am but a “salary man” a “corporate drone” and cannot even conceive of taking such a bold and impetuous action!” I say to you, do not give into despair and speak not of such shameful surrender! Cast aside these meaningless terms such as “salaryman” and simply live as a man! No more, no less! And if you lack courage, than you need only learn to have courage and endurance by the example of that great American President Theodore Roosevelt. Learn well his manner of bravery by practice and so take back your precious slumber by practice! Just listen to this marvelous passage, my dear readers:
Until next time, my friends!
“Having been a rather sickly and awkward boy, I was, as a young man, at first both nervous and distrustful of my own prowess. I had to train myself painfully and laboriously not merely as regards my body but as regards my soul and spirit…When a boy I read a passage in one of Marryat’s books which always impressed me. In this passage the captain of some small British man-of-war is explaining to the hero how to acquire the quality of fearlessness. He says that at the outset almost every man is frightened when he goes into action, but that the course to follow is for the man to keep such a grip on himself that he can act just as if he was not frightened. After this is kept up long enough, it changes from pretense to reality, and the man does in very fact become fearless by sheer dint of practicing fearlessness when he does not feel it. This was the theory upon which I went. There were all kinds of things of which I was afraid at first, ranging from grizzly bears to “mean” horses and gun-fighters; but by acting as if I was not afraid I gradually ceased to be afraid. Most men can have the same experience if they choose.”
So you see it all begins with a choice, dear readers. And be you meek, sickly, or awkward, I tell you it is imperative to gain a little bit of fearlessness every day so you can take back the night, and seize from it the glorious slumber that is your birthright!
Until next time, my friends!
What a splendid land this is, and how lovely are its people! Fear not, I promise not to eat anyone.
